Palmetto Spinal Center / Dr. Erik Younginer

Palmetto Spinal Center / Dr. Erik Younginer Dr. Erik Younginer is a state and nationally board certified chiropractic physician excelling in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.

These range from disorders, injuries, and general pain of the neck and back and the extremities. After a thorough intake of your history, review of previous radiology studies, examination, and x-rays when necessary, care is rendered beginning on the initial office visit. Treatments can include electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound therapy, moist heat therapy, spinal manipulations blending the most common techniques in American chiropractic care, traction, exercise instruction, and massage therapy by a licensed therapist.

While fully aware of this new environment in which we all are living, the office remains open. Unless there is a mandatory order by federal or local government, we will stay open for our patients. Many precautions which need to be in place now have already been normal operating procedures for the practice. These include:

- hand sanitizer is provided at the front desk with patients prompted to use
-daily sign in forms are temporarily not being used, new patients can print history intake forms from our website and complete and bring to their initial appointment
- appointments are scheduled as to avoid waits in the waiting room and contact with multiple people
-all tables are cleaned thoroughly with anti viral and bacterial solution following each use along with new face paper change
- the doctor and massage therapist washes his/her hands before entrance into each patient’s room
-should you have ANY symptoms to include coughing, sneezing, fever, etc. you are discouraged from coming to the office and may be turned away out of consideration of potential spread of any illness to others

We will overcome this! I wish you all health and safety through this crisis for our country and world. Know that I am here if you need me.

In the new year with the routine rush of people to the gym with resolutions, let this motivate you further. I have always promoted the importance of strength training as integral to overall health. It is the best way to combat osteoporosis, and this study's finding may be a surprise benefit to many.

Strength training is foundational for optimal health; resistance training also benefits your heart, metabolism, cognition and mental health.

The water content of discs increases when we lie down, and the discs increase in size. During the day while we are upright, the discs lose hydration and shrink. This explains why we are tallest in the morning. Because discs are effectively swollen in the early day hours and more susceptible to injury, it is recommended that we limit forward flexing exercises in our first couple hours of awakening. These would include toe touches, sit-ups, and compressive exercises like weight-loaded squats.

Lift to Lose

Jump off the treadmill, if want to lose weight. If you change nothing about your exercise routine now, it's almost a guarantee you will find the pounds creeping up. This all boils down to a loss of muscle mass — a condition called sarcopenia that begins at age 40. In fact, up to 40 percent of muscle mass is lost between the ages of 40 and 80. This alone is the kiss of death to metabolism.

Additionally, attempts to lose weight on low-calorie diets can lead to even more lost muscle. Studies have found that regular resistance or strength training may be a better alternative than your daily runs to preserve and gain muscle — even when coupled with a low-calorie diet. Aerobic exercise is still important, just don't make it your only form of activity.
