As we celebrate Hispanic American Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15), we honor Cuban-American artist, world traveler and EverTrue Laclede Groves resident, Tommie Lee.

Born in Cuba to a Cuban father and an American mother, Tommie grew up speaking English at home and Spanish in her community – skills that opened doors throughout her life.

After moving to the United States in 8th grade, she flipped the script: Spanish at home, English everywhere else. Her bilingualism became a passport to the world, helping her build a career as a secretary for an international company, where she worked closely with South American partners and traveled the globe.

Upon moving to EverTrue Laclede Groves, Tommie Lee found opportunities to remain true to her passions. As a resident receiving StillYou® memory support services, she had access to join the Opening Minds through Art (OMA) program at Maryville University. Designed for people experiencing Alzheimer’s and dementia, Tommie Lee joined Occupational Therapy students for weekly sessions, enjoying painting and conversation.

Always an artist, today Tommie Lee’s apartment is filled with her work – watercolors inspired by her travels to Ireland, Italy, Germany, and, of course, Cuba, alongside hand-painted items and even a bust of herself she sculpted. 🧑‍🎨

Tommie Lee’s story is a beautiful example of how heritage, language and creativity can support a life EverTrue to purpose and passion.

EverTrue is now the 11th largest non profit multi site senior living organization in the U.S., according to the 2025 LeadingAge Ziegler 200 report!

Our 2024 affiliation with Diakon Senior Services expanded EverTrue to include 12 Life Plan Communities throughout Missouri, Illinois and Pennsylvania.

And doesn't even include our diverse Affordable Housing communities, our amazing EverTrue Anywhere Care programs and services, or our important charitable foundation work.

Emily Sitzes, EverTrue Laclede Groves Wellness Director, was recently recognized as a 2025 recipient of the Senior Housing News Memory Care Innovation Award, a national award honoring visionary leaders redefining cognitive care.

Emily's work in the EverTrue StillYou® model is devoted to everyday wellness for residents in EverTrue Laclede Grove Memory Support but this special award called attention to her commitment to innovation, which enabled her to pilot the Composure Sound Blanket, a sound-based technology designed to enhance sleep quality.

Emily uses the tool to bring pink noise, a calming sound frequency, to 20 residents receiving Memory Support services with the goal of improving nighttime rest, increasing daytime engagement and reducing falls.

“Emily’s work goes beyond technology; it represents deeply human, sensory-rich pathways to connection that is a blueprint for what’s possible in memory support,” said Valerie Cooper, EverTrue Vice President Life Plan Communities, and a 2024 Memory Care Innovation Award recipient. “She leads with both heart and strategy, and her impact will be felt across the industry.”

💫The magic of music has returned to historic Powell Hall!💫

EverTrue was on site Friday to share in the magic of music as a Presenting Sponsor of the 2025/2026 Coffee Concert Series, a special event of the 146th season of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO) in the newly expanded Jack C. Taylor Center Powell Hall.

The EverTrue advancement team and Hylton Point Apartments were gifted a 2025 grant from AARP Livable Communities with funding support provided by Toyota USA and have completed a much-needed Neighborhood Safety Project with the funds.

The funds helped to build a speed hump in the Hylton Point Apartments area, while also allowing for a Neighborhood Safety Fair on Friday, Sept. 26 for the apartment’s older adult residents, their families and the surrounding communities.

EverTrue would also like to thank Shameem Clark Hubbard, Alderwoman of Ward 10, and the Centennial Christian Church for their letters of support regarding the need for the grant.
This initiative is set to bring significant benefits to our community, and we couldn’t have done it without your support.

We’re excited to share this positive change and look forward to seeing the impact. Residents already are enjoying the benefits!

“I have an electric bike, and I go everywhere on it – to the Arch, to the park, to the zoo and all over. I appreciate having a safe place to store it now. Thank you AARP and Toyota,” said a four-year resident of Hylton Point Apartments and avid bike rider.

Judge Oxenhandler read some short excerpts from his book and answered questions from the audience. He also brought a two special guests with him to help tell the story. Linda Harris, a cook with our Care Center, celebrated 50 years with , and had only one thing on her mind when thinking about all her hard work – “the residents”. Linda’s focus and commitment to the EverTrue values have made her instrumental as a role model and a leader in the Dining Services department where she not only creates great food, but also helps to encourage the residents to eat through interaction and personality. “Since I was first interviewed, my focus has been the residents. Their happiness is really what we are here for.” That energy and enthusiasm is what makes Linda one of the top employees in the EverTrue Lenoir Woods Dining Services. “Linda has done so much for our department. We are lucky to have her,” said Jason Martin, Director of Dining Services. Linda’s fellow team members and a few residents were able to share their well wishes for her big anniversary in a special video. She is the only EverTrue team member to hit this remarkable milestone of 50 years in 2025. Celebrate Linda with us by wishing her a Happy 50th Anniversary!

Lenoir Woods Olympics continued this week with Ax Throwing, Basketball, and a Hockey Shootout! We had a great group of competitors and spectators, along with a fantastic facilitator. Due to weather our last two events will take place next week.
Congratulations to all our medalists and a big thank you to everyone for participating and coming out to support fellow residents. See you at the last two games next week!

The Lenoir Woods Olympics have started with a bang this week! The events so far have been a puzzel race, chipping challenge, ping pong knockdown, and shuffleboard bowling. Residents and staff have been enjoying the games and cheering eachother on. I cannot wait to see what today's ax throwing brings!
