Our community partner, Howard County Office of Children and Families is hosting an upcoming free virtual workshop on April 30th at 7pm: Effective Parenting Plans: Co-Parenting Across Two Households and Into Summer

Creating a successful parenting plan is crucial for fostering a harmonious and supportive environment for children, especially when parenting across two households. We'll focus on some of the unique challenges that families face leading up to the summer break, which brings a shift in routine - a welcome relief to children but a source of logistical stress for parents. In this workshop we'll review the key elements of building a comprehensive parenting plan, focusing on the practical steps and strategies to schedule changes, address travel logistics, vacation time, and daily routines. needed to ensure a smooth and collaborative co-parenting experience.

Creative Coping
Our April theme reminds us that emotional expression opens the door to clearer thinking. Kids don’t always have the words for their feelings — but they can draw them, move them, or color them.

Try this:
Share a quick doodle from your own day, then invite your child to draw “what their day felt like.” It’s a simple way to connect and help them process emotions.

The Science of Calm

This month, we’re sharing simple ways to support both the emotional and thinking brain. Big feelings can shut down a child’s thinking brain — which is why calming the body is the first step to clearer thinking.

Try the 3 Breaths Reset with your children:

Inhale for 4
Hold for 2
Exhale for 6

Doing it together helps them feel supported and grounded. Don't forget, our April programs start this week. Info and registration: www.nfrchelp.org

Curiosity as a Superpower
This month, we’re helping families use curiosity to support emotional awareness and flexible thinking.

When emotions rise, try asking:
“What is your body telling you right now?”

For younger kids:
“Does your tummy feel tight? Are your hands in fists?”

Then guide them toward a calming action — a breath, a stretch, or a quiet moment.

Visit www.nfrchelp.org for all of the programs and support we provide to children and families.

Kids and teens often feel stress before they have the words for it. A simple question like, “What’s been on your mind today?” can open the door to connection and help them feel seen.

Our KidsConnex, TeensConnex, and Reaching for Resilience programs give children and teens space to practice naming emotions, build coping skills, and feel supported during family transitions.

Registration for our April programs is open — scan the QR code to learn more and save your child’s spot.
