Sarah Breedlove Walker

Sarah Breedlove Walker was an inventor and businesswoman, and became one of the largest employers of African-American women of her time.
Often know as Madame C.J. Walker, she manufactured beauty products for other African-American women using formulas she developed after working for a pharmacist who taught her chemistry.

Walker’s company hired and trained thousands of Black women to sell her hair-care products in shops, by mail, and door-to-door. This helped many become more independent during a time when job opportunities for women were limited.

Thurgood Marshall

After graduating from law school, Marshall started working on civil rights cases to fight for equality for African-Americans. But probably his best known case was Brown vs. Board of Education, which challenged school segregation, Marshall argued in front of the Supreme Court, the highest court in the United States, that "separate" was not equal, as people who supported segregation believed.

Ultimately the justices agreed with Marshall, and in 1954 school segregation was abolished.

Mae C. Jamison

Before her 30th birthday, Mae C. Jemison had received two undergraduate degrees and a medical degree, served two years as a Peace Corps medical officer in West Africa, and was selected to join the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's astronaut training program. Her eight-day space flight aboard the space shuttle Endeavour in 1992 established Jemison as the United States' first female African-American space traveler.

Benjamin O. Davis, Jr.

It was his dream to be a pilot and he would let nothing stop him for achieving his dream. A West Point graduate, he dealt with racism that could have held him back.

In 1941, as the US entered World War II, the military opened up opportunities for African-American soldiers to train to become pilots for the first time. Benjamin was part of the first graduating class of Black pilots, and he was quickly given command of his unit.

He and his men bravely flew into enemy territory in Germany and Italy, successfully completing many dangerous missions. Known as the Tuskegee Airmen, they proved that African-American pilots were just as skilled at their
white counterparts.
