Every time I go to doctor's appointments with clients, I'm reminded of why it matters so much.

I was in an appointment recently, and I could feel the room shifting. The physician was focused on what didn't fit the diagnosis. My client was getting flustered. You could feel her shrinking.

So I just paused it.

I said: "We believe you. We believe that what you're experiencing is real. And doctor, if this doesn't fit her current diagnosis, I'm wondering if that means we need a new one."

The whole energy in the room changed.

She looked at me and said, "Thank you." That was it. Just thank you.

I think about how many appointments happen every single day where no one says that. Where an 85-year-old walks in with real concerns and walks out feeling like a burden. Where pain gets dismissed as "well, you're getting older."

Where an intelligent, high-powered person gets reduced to their age.

They have lived in that body their entire life. They know when something is wrong. Our job is to make sure someone in that room believes them and knows how to ask the right questions to get them answers.

That's what we train our team to do. That's what showing up looks like.

I went to visit a client who was struggling in the hospital one day. It was just her and me. She had gotten a new health plan, and it was moving forward quickly.

I asked her if we could pause and talk frankly. I told her I didn't think this plan was in line with what we had talked about that day in the ER.

I needed to know she understood the plan, and if that was her choice, I supported her. I also needed her to know if she needed help telling people she wasn't on board with this plan, I would lead the charge.

She said, "This isn't what I want. I am done fighting. I just want to close my eyes and rest."

She gave me permission to tell the health team and her family what she really wanted.

I had the hard, tearful conversations with her family. I kept pushing when her health team had objections or used words like "giving up."

With the help of the team at Navigate Wellness and hospice, she was able to go home. There, she was able to have visitors, reminisce, be spoiled, and focus on her comfort.

Here's how you can still support them from a distance:

▪️Go on a fact-finding mission. What's actually going on right now in their daily life? Are they eating? Taking meds correctly? Making it to appointments?

▪️Get access to their portals — medical records, prescriptions, and upcoming appointments. You can't coordinate care if you're flying blind.

▪️Research local resources. What transportation options exist? What programs are available for seniors in their area? What support is already out there?

▪️Find the "nos" and turn them into "yeses." Maybe they said no to help before, but would they say yes to rides? To meal delivery? To someone checking in a few times a week?
