What is a tongue tie? Here's what you need to know. 👅

For about 5-10% of babies, the tongue and floor of mouth separation process is disrupted in utero, resulting in an abnormally short or tight frenulum—medically known as ankyloglossia, or tongue tie.

This condition is hereditary and can vary widely in thickness, elasticity, and placement. A tongue tie may restrict tongue mobility to different degrees, potentially impacting feeding skills, oral motor development, and breathing habits from infancy onward. In severe cases, the frenulum can completely tether the tongue tip to the lower jaw.

A proper tongue tie diagnosis should be based on functional limitation, not just appearance. Feeding assessments from qualified specialists are essential for evaluating a baby's oral motor skills and determining if treatment is needed.
