Oral bacteria use sugars to reproduce and to create the acids that cause dental caries also known as cavities. The longer sugars stay on the teeth, the more the bacteria can cause dental disease. It is better for the teeth to eat 10 pieces of candy all at once than it is to eat 1 piece of candy every hour for 10 hours. Sticky candies like gummies, caramels, lollipops, and other hard candies are more problematic for this same reason. We recommend carefully brushing your child's teeth after exposure to sugars to minimize the risk of cavities.

What's the difference between milk allergy and milk intolerance?

- An allergy is an immune reaction to the protein in milk. Allergic reactions can be serious and life-threatening. Most people with milk allergies have to have epinephrine injectors. Milk allergies can be outgrown, but exposure to milk should be done under the supervision of an allergist.

- Milk intolerance is usually an inability to digest lactose, the sugar in milk. Symptoms include gas, nausea, cramping, and diarrhea. Lactase can be given to help with symptoms. Lactose intolerance usually starts in later childhood, adolescence, or adulthood and is usually lifelong. More than 60% of the world's population will develop lactose intolerance in their lifetime.

Polio is caused by a virus that affects infants and young children more often than other age groups. Most cases of polio are mild. Rarely, polio infection also can be much more severe and can cause paralysis. Paralytic polio causes muscles to be paralyzed—leaving some people physically impaired for the rest of their lives.

Since the mid-1950s, the polio vaccines have led to a dramatic decline—with over a 99% reduction in polio cases around the world. The "natural" or "wild" type of poliovirus that infected children decades ago is eliminated from the U.S. and much of the rest of the world.

The polio vaccine is recommended for children by the American Academy of Pediatrics. If you think your child has fallen behind on immunizations, talk with your pediatrician.

The symptoms of Hib depend on the specific disease that it causes. For instance:

Meningitis-- is an inflammation and swelling of the tissues that cover the brain and spinal cord. Until a vaccine became available, Hib was the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in the United States. It occurs most often in children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years. Symptoms include a fever, a decrease in appetite, an increase in crying or irritability, seizures, excessive sleepiness, and vomiting. In children older than 2 years, there may be additional symptoms such as a headache, a stiff neck, and back pain.

Epiglottitis-- is a rare but serious inflammation in the throat, affecting the epiglottis (a flap of tissue at the back of the throat) and occurring most often in children 2 to 4 years of age. Your child’s first symptoms will probably be a severe sore throat and fever (typically a temperature greater than 101°F [38.3°C]), followed by a raspy or harsh sound called stridor during breathing. As the epiglottis becomes swollen, it can make swallowing difficult, trigger drooling, and may block normal breathing. Some children with epiglottitis have choked to death. Prompt treatment usually can prevent this.

Other Hib infection-- This bacteria causes infection in the joints (arthritis), bones (osteomyelitis), skin of the face (cheek or around the eye), lungs (pneumonia), and even the heart (pericarditis). Signs of infections in these areas include fever, swelling, pain, and redness along with a drastic decrease in energy and activity.

These Hib diseases are serious. Thanks to the vaccine, they are preventable.

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory infection. It is caused by bacteria called Bordetella pertussis. The infection attacks the lining of the breathing passages. People can get whooping cough any time of year, but generally infections are seen in late summer and fall.

Symptoms of whooping cough vary based age, medical conditions and whether the child is vaccinated against the disease. A main sign is strong coughing. Between coughs, children take deep, fast breaths. This can create the high-pitched "whooping" sound that gives the illness its name. The cough of pertussis has also been called the "100-day cough" because it may last for months. Sometimes, the cough returns with future respiratory infections.

Whooping cough can make kids sick at any age, but it is especially dangerous for young babies. At least four U.S. infants have died of whooping cough in 2025—two in Louisiana and two in Kentucky—as outbreaks continue.

Younger children should get the vaccine at 2 months, 4 months, and 6 months of age, and at 12 to 18 months and 4 or 5 years of age before the start of school.

Tetanus, also known as lockjaw (which comes from the locking or tightening of the muscles around the jaw, which prevents a child from opening her mouth or swallowing), is a serious and potentially fatal infection caused by a poison (toxin) made by the bacteria Clostridium tetani. This germ is present in soil and can contaminate a wound. In fact, any open wound or cut, no matter how small, is a possible site of a tetanus infection. However, an infection is more likely to occur in deep puncture wounds and those contaminated with dirt, f***s, or soil. A child who is injured by a dirty garden tool or a rock thrown up by a lawn mower may develop tetanus if she has not been properly immunized. A newborn can get the infection if the umbilical cord gets contaminated.

Tetanus is not contagious and cannot be spread from person to person. Because of the common use of tetanus immunizations, tetanus is very rare in the United States. There are only a few dozen cases each year, usually in unimmunized people or people who have not kept up with the recommended booster every 10 years.

If your child has a wound that may have been contaminated with soil, contact your pediatrician as soon as possible, especially if you’re unsure of your youngster’s immunization status.

Diphtheria can cause a mild fever, a sore throat, and chills a few days after infection with the bacteria. A nasal discharge, fatigue, and a thick gray membrane covering the throat may develop as well. If not treated promptly, the infection can spread a toxin or poison throughout the body and cause very serious problems, including difficulty swallowing, paralysis, and heart failure.

The infection can be spread easily through sneezing and coughing. However, thanks to the widespread use of the vaccine against diphtheria (part of the combination diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis [DTaP] vaccine), there are very few cases of diphtheria in the United States.
