The quiet hours when medicine has done all it can. When the monitors are turned down low, and the rush is over.
Sometimes family couldn't make it in time. Sometimes there was no family left to call. But we had an unwritten rule on our ward: No one leaves this world alone.
So, we pulled up a chair. We dimmed the lights. We held their hand. We smoothed their hair. We whispered that it was okay to let go.
For those final moments, we stepped in as daughters, sons, mothers, or friends.
It broke our hearts every single time. But being there for that final journey was our highest honor.
