Naturholistic Counseling & Consulting, LLC had the pleasure of conducting a mental health and wellness workshop at the Annual Youth Symposium held by the ladies Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc and the gentlemen of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

We had a great time assessing our own mental health and well-being to create plans to enhance our wellness. Black Maternal Mental Health Week (July 19 – 25) raises awareness of maternal mental health issues affecting Black women during pregnancy, childbirth, and after.

Forty percent of Black women experience maternal mental health symptoms, which is almost twice the rate of all other women. These symptoms include:
* depression
* anxiety
* su***de
* substance use disorders

Risk factors for perinatal depression and other mood disorders among Black women in the U.S. include but not limited:
• Lack of social support
• Perceived stress
• Low socioeconomic status
• Poor access to healthcare
• Prior history of depression
• History of sexual/physical violence
• Poor access to education
