University of Missouri Family Medicine Residency

University of Missouri Family Medicine Residency The MU Family Medicine Residency is an ACGME-accredited program that welcomes 14 new residents per year to help them become well-rounded family physicians

The University of Missouri (MU) Family Medicine Residency was established more than 50 years ago. Since 1975, our program has graduated 502 physicians who serve in diverse settings in 41 states across the country, plus Canada, England, Africa, and the Philippines.

● For nearly 30 years, US News and World Report has recognized us as one of the nation's top graduate programs.

● 4 continuity clinic sites allow residents the choice to serve urban underserved, suburban, or rural patient populations during residency.

● Our 10,000 square foot Simulation Center has more than 15 years experience in resident education.

● MU Healthcare is a strategic partner with the Cerner Corporation, meaning increased accessibility to state-of-the-art tools and technologies that promote concepts key to the Patient-Centered Medical Home

MAFP Advocacy Day! 🩺 Today, family medicine doctors from around Missouri - including several of MU’s residents and faculty - gathered at the state capitol to advocate on behalf of our patients in our profession. We had the privilege of speaking to our state senators and representatives about issues that matter to our practices and our patients, and even got to listen in as our attendings testified in a senate committee meeting. We love being part of a program that prioritizes advocacy for our communities! A big thank you, as always, to the Missouri Academy of Family Physicians for their hard work in setting up these events and supporting resident advocacy! 💙

PS. Yes, I copy pasted Dr. Thurman from a later selfie because of format issues uploading both photos. She is not AI, I promise. 😆

✨ Residency Spotlight ✨ featuring Dr. Emily Dircks! (Casey’s other half)

I am from Freeburg, Illinois which is a small town about 45 minutes east of STL. I did my undergrad at Indiana State, and medical school at Southern Illinois University (obviously I love to hop around the Midwest). I fell in love with the FM program at Mizzou and can’t imagine being anywhere else.

Residency clinic: South Providence

Medical interests: FMOB, Obesity Medicine, Gender Affirming Care, Women’s Health, Academic Medicine

Favorite karaoke song: Everytime We Touch by Cascada

Hobbies: reading, baking, running, watching tv shows and going to the movie theater, playing with my sweet puppy

Fun fact: I recently got engaged to my high school sweetheart (cheesy, I know) and we’re proud parents to the most perfect puppy ever, Janey.

✨ Residency Spotlight ✨ featuring Dr. Casey Fogarty! Residency partners with Dr. Emily Dircks.

I was born and raised in St. Louis, MO but I consider myself a COMO townie at this point after attending undergrad, grad school, med school and now residency at the ZOU. I ultimately plan on practicing medicine in my partner’s home country of Australia after completing my training.

Residency clinic: Compass Health

Medical interests: OB care, Women’s Health, Gender Affirming Care, Substance Use Disorder, Advocacy, FQHC care

Favorite karaoke song: Wannabe by the Spice Girls

Hobbies: Long distance running, cycling, hiking, reading, listening to true crime podcasts, traveling (especially internationally), and baking/cooking/eating delicious food

Fun fact: I am trying to run a half or full marathon in every state. So far I’ve done 15 states, one of which I completed with my ~amazing~ residency partner in Minnesota

Residency Book Club! 📚 We read books on a wide range of topics that affect our patients and our community. Tonight, we covered “Disfigured: On Fairy Tales, Disability, and Making Space” by Amanda Leduc, who has cerebral palsy. She examines how the portrayal of differences and disabilities - both in classic fairy tales and the media in general - shape our cultural understanding of disability. We had a great discussion sharing how the topics in the book have impacted ourselves and loved ones, as well as how we can better support our patients moving forward.
A huge thanks to attending Dr. Gov-Ari for hosting and providing a delicious dinner!
