Did You Know?

A 10% VA disability rating still has real value.

Some Veterans hear “10%” and think it is not worth filing. That is false.

A 10% rating can mean:
-Monthly tax-free compensation
-Proof that the VA officially recognized your condition as service-connected
-A starting point for a future increase if the condition worsens
-A foundation for building additional claims later

For many Veterans, 10% is not the end of the road. It is the first step.

If your injuries, pain, tinnitus, mental health condition, or other service-connected issues are affecting your daily life, do not assume a lower rating means it is not worth pursuing.
-You earned the right to file.
-You earned the right to be heard.
-And even 10% matters.

Did You Know?

Filing a VA disability claim does not take benefits away from anyone else. The money has already been allocated by Congress—your claim doesn’t reduce another veteran’s support.

You earned these benefits through your service and sacrifice. Filing a claim is not “taking” from someone else—it’s about receiving what you’ve rightfully earned.

When you file, you’re not only securing care and tax-free compensation for yourself, but also setting an example for fellow veterans. Encourage your brothers and sisters in arms to file too—because every veteran deserves the support they earned.

At Brookside Veteran Services, we stand ready to guide you through the process. Your service wrote the check—now it’s time to cash it.

🇺🇸 Did You Know? You may still qualify for VA Disability Benefits, even if your diagnosis came years after leaving the military.

Many Veterans believe they missed their window to apply—but that’s not true. If your medical condition can be linked to your time in service, you may be eligible for VA compensation, regardless of when the diagnosis occurred.

🧠 Examples include:
• PTSD or other mental health conditions
• Agent Orange-related illnesses
• Hearing loss or tinnitus
• Chronic pain or degenerative joint conditions

📌 The key is proving service connection, even if symptoms appeared long after discharge.

💼 At Brookside Veteran Services, we guide you through the process of documenting, filing, and building a strong VA claim—even if you’ve been denied before. Our mission is to make sure every Veteran receives the benefits they've earned.

Did you know? CHAMPVA may help cover healthcare costs for your spouse or children if you’re a Veteran with a permanent and total (P&T) service-connected disability—or if you’re a surviving spouse/child of a Veteran who died from a service-connected condition.

Here’s what CHAMPVA can do:
✅ Helps pay for doctor visits, hospital care, labs, mental health, prescriptions, and more
✅ Can work as a primary or secondary coverage (depending on what other insurance is in place)
✅ Often used by families when dependents don’t qualify for TRICARE

Common misconceptions:
❌ CHAMPVA is not the same as VA healthcare
❌ It’s not automatic—you usually have to apply and submit eligibility documents

If you’re P&T (or a survivor) and your family is paying out-of-pocket for insurance or medical bills, CHAMPVA could be a big win.

Want to know if your family may qualify? Message Brookside Veteran Services and we’ll point you in the right direction.

🇺🇸 Did You Know?

Even a 10% VA disability rating can open the door to tax-free monthly income, VA healthcare eligibility, and additional state benefits. That first step could lead to more support over time—your rating can increase as your conditions progress or new evidence is added.

📈 Don’t leave benefits you’ve earned on the table. Start your claim today—your service deserves recognition, and your future deserves security.

MYTH: “If I’m working, I can’t get a high VA rating.”

TRUTH: You can be working full-time and still qualify for 70%—and in some cases 100% depending on the severity, frequency, and functional impact of your condition(s).

Here’s what trips Veterans up:
A VA rating isn’t a “you can’t work” score. It’s a how much this impacts your life score.

The VA looks at things like:
How symptoms affect sleep, concentration, stamina, and daily tasks

Whether you have flare-ups that derail your routine

If you miss work, need accommodations, or struggle to maintain consistency

How your condition impacts relationships, mood, mobility, and quality of life

What matters most: clear evidence + clear explanation.

A lot of Veterans are trained to push through. That mindset is respected—but it can work against you in a claim if you minimize what’s really happening.

If you’ve ever said:
“I’m fine” (but you’re not sleeping)
“I can handle it” (but your body is paying for it)
“Other guys have it worse” (but your life is still being impacted)
…it might be time to stop underselling your story.

Brookside helps Veterans understand what the VA is actually measuring and how to communicate it clearly—without exaggeration and without confusion.

🚨 Action Needed: VA Just Changed How Disability Ratings Are Evaluated — Effective Immediately (Feb. 17, 2026)

On February 17, 2026, the VA published an Interim Final Rule called “Evaluative Rating: Impact of Medication.” It’s effective immediately, and it changes a deceptively simple (but massive) part of VA disability exams: the VA will now evaluate many conditions based on how you function with medication/treatment—rather than how the condition impacts you without it.

Why this matters:
If medication or treatment reduces symptoms, the VA can rate you at a lower level of impairment—and that can mean lower compensation for both new claims and re-evaluations.
The VA’s own language says it will compensate based on the disability level after medication or treatment improves functional impairment.

⚠️Public Comment Window is OPEN: Feb. 17 through Apr. 20, 2026

This is an interim final rule, which means public comments must be accepted and reviewed—and those comments become part of the official record.

✅ What to do today (takes 10 minutes)
1) Contact your U.S. Representative + Senators
Tell them clearly where you stand and what you want them to do (oversight, hearings, pressure VA to withdraw/modify, and ensure proper review).
2) Submit a public comment (this is huge)

🟢Go to Regulations.gov and search: RIN 2900-AS49 (VA: “Evaluative Rating: Impact of Medication”).
✅Submit your comment before April 20, 2026.

🇺🇸 Did you know? Some Veterans can receive BOTH Military Retirement Pay and VA Disability Compensation.

f you’re a military retiree with a VA disability rating of 50% or higher, you may qualify for Concurrent Retirement and Disability Pay (CRDP)—which can allow you to collect full retirement pay and full VA disability compensation at the same time.

✅ Why this matters:
That can mean thousands more per year in benefits you’ve earned—without having to “choose one or the other.”

Quick notes:
CRDP is generally for regular longevity retirees (20+ years, or certain reserve retirements).

VA disability compensation remains tax-free.

Not every retiree situation is identical—some may fall under CRSC (combat-related) instead.

If you’re not sure what you qualify for, Brookside can help you understand your options and what to look for in your pay records.
