Back to school also means back to sports for many students. From strikes and sprains to footwork and fractures, many athletes will find themselves with minor to major injuries from the field or court.

Several considerations should be followed to reduce the risk of injury:

1. Dynamic Stretch
to warm up muscles

2. Use Proper Equipment
Make sure it fits/works properly before game time

3. Avoid Muscle Overuse
Repeated motions can cause too much stress on the growth plates. Rest time is as important as training time

4. Take a Break When Injured
Injured athletes should not continue playing until they are evaluated by a sports medicine professional

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain for adults, especially those between the ages of 40 and 60. Athletes who put a significant amount of stress on their heels may feel plantar fasciitis at a young age. Plantar fasciitis may affect men and women who stay on their feet for several hours a day, and it can also be a result of wear-and-tear over the years.

Too much tension and stress on the plantar fascia in the arch of your foot can result in small tears in the ligament. This may cause stabbing heel pain or pain across the bottom of your foot, especially noticeable when you first stand up after sitting or begin to walk after getting out of bed in the morning.

Achilles Tendon injuries often become chronic if left untreated.

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) can help!

The tendons in our feet have a very limited blood supply, which creates a challenging healing environment. PRP contains various growth factors that are essential regulators of injured tissue repair. PRP - pulled from your own blood - is injected using ultrasound guidance @ Bluetail Medical Group.

Patients with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis are, generally, either eventual or immediate knee replacement candidates. The U.S. is expected to hit 3.5m operations by 2030!

This big surgery, which involves amputation of the existing joint and insertion of a knee replacement device, can result in complications including blood clots, infection, heart attack, stroke, and increased chronic pain. Despite this being such a common procedure, you might be surprised to learn that studies have shown that many patients receive almost no relief and some feel worse after having this surgery. The trend of younger and more active patients having advanced levels of knee OA/surgery is probably driving this increased level of dissatisfaction with quality of life post-surgery.

The good news is that our orthobiologic treatments using your OWN regenerative properties found in your plasma and bone marrow aspirate concentrate (bmac) can often help you either avoid surgery, or at a minimum, delay the need for surgery.

🌞 With summer in full force and the hottest week upon us in St. Louis, it can get tough (and potentially dangerous) to get outside and get moving. Sky high temps don't mean your workout plan has to go cold!

1. Start and end s-l-o-w-l-y:
A slow start and cool-down ending is a must when working out during the summer heat.

2. Set a new goal:
Give yourself a temporary goal that is realistic in the heat. Been meaning to increase your daily steps? Strive for multiple short walks in the early morning or dusk.

3. Avoid the intense hours:
The sun is hottest between 10am and 3pm, so try to avoid outside exercise during those hours.

4. Explore indoor exercise:
If you typically rely on outdoor running or long-distance walking as your daily movement, try something new inside. Lap swimming or a group exercise class at the gym are great ways to change it up.

5. Get set with the proper gear:
If you are going to continue outside, choosing the right clothing is crucial to keeping you comfortable in the heat. Choose lightweight, light-colored, sweat-wicking material for exercise clothing and socks. Choose shoes that are lightweight and well-ventilated. And don't forget the UV ray-blocking sunglasses and sunscreen!

6. Stay hydrated:
When the temperatures heat up, we sweat more, which can lead to dehydration. Make sure to drink 16-20oz of fluid an hour or so before exercising and then 6-12oz of fluid every 15 minutes or so while you are outside. When you are finished, drink another 16-24oz to replace the fluid you've lost. Also, consider adding an electrolyte replacement.

7. Listen to your body:
Stop if you are feeling lightheaded or differently than you typically feel while exercising. The risk for heat exhaustion - and in extreme cases, heat stroke - are real.
