Research Spotlight: After more than a decade of research, the University of British Columbia used enzyme technology to successfully transplant a kidney converted from blood type A to universal type O to a patient in an irreversible coma with the patient's family's consent. The kidney functioned without signs of rejection and by the third day, the body began to tolerate the kidney.

Welcome Alesia Moorman MHA, MLS (ASCP) to the COLA team!

Alesia joined COLA in September as a surveyor. She has over 15 years of experience in the clinical laboratory setting, including 12 years specializing in microbiology. Prior to joining COLA, Alesia worked at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where she gained experience in microbiology and histocompatibility testing for organ donor and recipient matching. Originally from West Virginia, she is a proud mom of two and is passionate about learning new things and finding ways to blend science and creativity.

CMS Update:
CMS has revised its post-public health emergency (PHE) guidance originally posted on 5/11/23.

* The temporary enforcement discretion for remote review of cytology digital slides will end on 3/23/26
* Laboratories must have separate CLIA certificates for each remote site continuing this practice
* Enforcement discretion remains for other digital data/images reviewed remotely under a primary laboratory's CLIA certificate

COLA’s CEO, Nancy Stratton and COLA’s Medical Director, Dr. Cynthia Bruzzi, MD, were in Washington DC on Monday in discussions with offices who support the Medical Laboratory Personnel Shortage Relief act of 2025 and RESULTS act (Reforming and Enhancing Sustainable Updates to Laboratory Testing Services Act). They were also in meetings discussing the importance of the laboratory industry in healthcare.
