If you happened to be perusing The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Jul., 1894, Vol. 2, you might notice mention of my 8th and 9th great grandfathers. Edward Goodrich (1693-1720) and his father, Major Charles Goodrich (1651-1726), were Public Officers in Virginia 1702 for Prince George County. My father's maternal great-grandmother's line of McCool's lead to this branch of the Goodrich family who so far have been traced to the Isle of Wight, one of the oldest county governments in the United States, as far back as the early 1600's .

This evening I present an application for Susan A Spain (born 1858 in Tennessee) and her children to become citizens of the Mississippi Choctaw Indian Tribe in Oklahoma. Susan was the daughter of my 4th cousin, 4x's removed, John Westly Spain (1829-1880). According to the claims, she believed that her mother, Nancy Jane Childers (1839-1877) may have been a citizen herself. I know little about Nancy at this point, so the research must continue.

It would appear there were some rabble-rousers in the family tree, which becomes significant if you are part of a Quaker community. Samuel Hood (1673-1732) was an immigrant from England who joined the Quaker community of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During the April 1, 1719 Quaker Darby Monthly Meeting in Darby, Pennsylvania, he was admonished for being "overcome with liquor." Samuel was my 7th great-grandfather following my Grandpa Spain's maternal grandmother's lineage. He and his wife Mary had 5 children.

The colorization of old photos brings alive our ancestors from long ago! This circa 1900 photo was shared on Ancestry several years ago and notes three sons of my 3rd great grand-uncle. Their grandfather, Joshua Spain (1759-1849), was one a group of settlers who came from Dinwiddie County, VA to establish North Lewisburg, Ohio. Meet the three brothers: John W. Spain (1835-1917), Enoch Spain (1827-1907), and Philander Spain (1821-1910). These were 3 of 8 sons who served in the Union Army, there 15 siblings in total-3 girls and 12 boys.

My 5th great grandfather turns out to be an interesting fellow in history. Following the lineage of my father's maternal grandmother, we come to Craig Ritchie (1758-1833). According to articles and accounts of others, my ancestor was a great friend and confidant of George Washington. Yes, THE George Washington. It appears they dine together often and George stayed with grandpa Craig several times. To post all of his accomplishments would take up a lot of space, so instead I leave here a personal invitation for dinner on March 6th, 1795.

Meet the brother of my Great Grandfather, William Sidney Pease, John Wesley Pease (1861-1952). When John in Pierceville, Indiana, his father, James, was 25 and his mother, Rachel, was 28. He married Emma Gladys Sebree and they had four children together. He then married Ida Mae (Addie) Ellis and they had six children together. He died on May 1, 1952, in Cold Spring, Kentucky, at the age of 91, and was buried in Petersburg, Kentucky. I have few photos of this generation on my father's mother's side, so I'm appreciative for the cousin who shared this.

"The House of Burgesses was an assembly of elected representatives from Virginia that met from 1643 to 1776. This democratically elected legislative body was the first of its kind in English North America."
I've recently been investigating the roles from of my father's ancestors may have played in Colonial Virginia and beyond. Today, it was discovered that both my 7th and 8th Great Grandfather's were Burgesses.
Edward Goodrich I (1692-1720) was Burgess of Prince George County in 1711, 1712-4, 1715, 1718, and 1720 until his death. His son, Edward Goodrich II (1713-1790)-possible Corporal or Captain-was Burgess for Brunswick County 1755-1758, 1758-1761, and additionally was Sheriff of the county in 1759.
The House of Burgesses were dissolved when Virginia's royal governor, John Murray, Earl of Dunmore, discovered that they were supporting the resistance to the Crown.

An update on one of the oldest members of the Spain Family Tree!
John Tower, my 9th great-grandfather, (1609-1701) baptized in Hingham, England. John is considered the found of the Tower Family in America!

"John left England and arrived in Massachusetts on June 1, 1637 and married Margaret Ibrook on February 13, 1638 in Charlestown.
He was one of the proprietors of Hingham, Massachusetts were he settled on Bachelor's Row (now Main Street). He initially started out with three acres of land and through the years purchased more acreage. He had also purchased some acres in Cohasset (then part of Hingham).
In 1645 he was one of the seven men chosen to oversee the prudential affairs of the town.
Some of the occupations that he was listed as having were: farmer, planter, way-warden, constable, and fence-viewer.
In 1675, during King Philip’s War, John was allowed to fortify his house with a garrison.

His house, today known as the Tower Homestead, near Tower Brook, Tower’s Bridge, and Tower Brook Road, still stands. [Although, according to William R. Cutter’s Genealogical and Personal Memoirs published in 1908: “Three of his sons built houses on this lot also, and some of the land has remained in the possession of descendants to the present time. The old house was torn down soon after 1800."

The story of a Female Pioneer has emerged! My 2nd cousin, 5x's removed, Hannah Amelia Montgomery King (1828-1892), traveled with the Alvus H. Patterson Company (1863), a wagon company. They departed from Florence, Nebraska on 29 June 1863. Hannah Amelia was 50 years old at departure and traveled for 67 days.
Hannah comes from the Pease-Tower-Perkins branch of the Spain side, which thus far has been dated back to the late 17th century in the New England states.

Found in the tree of another researcher, this interesting photograph gives more information about what my 1st cousin 4x removed, Enoch Spain (1827-1907) might have been like. A resident of Champaign County, husband and father of 10, his father William was one of many who came from Dinwiddie County, Va.

Nora Violet Spain (1910-1978) (4th Cousin 1x) and I are both direct descendants of Joshua Spain (1759-1840) who traveled from Dinwiddie, VA to North Lewisburg, Ohio to form a new community. According to the 1950 census, Nora was living with her husband, Charles Mount, and their 22 year old son, Donald. The home where they lived was listed as 211 Prospect St, Vermillion, SD and was built in 1900. That same 1384 sf home still stands.

Meet Imogene Maxine King (1915-1996). Imogene and I are the direct descendants of one of the original settlers of North Lewisburg, Ohio, Herbard Crowder (1765-1831). In 1950, census takers found Imogene living on a farm with her husband, Chester C. Bennett and their 2 daughters, Joan and Connie, in Clark, MO. The photo of her is from the 1920's and leaves the viewer to wonder what story it is trying to tell.

Kenneth A. Spain (1929-2012) and I are 5th cousins and descendants of Joshua Spain (1759-1840). In 1950, Kenneth was listed as a 21 yo teacher living with his wife Lenore and 2 yo daughter in Vermillion, South Dakota. Upon further inspection, the census actually says he was a Trucker for Joe O'Connor.

The Mumford's are numerous on the branches of my paternal grandmother's tree. While examining the 1950 Census, I explored Edward B Mumford (1925-2004) and his wife, Mary Ann Hasheian (1929-2019), in Selbyville, Delaware. The interesting piece noticed was the use of numbers in the "Code B" column to count people based on where they were born. A blank space meant you were born in the state of Delaware, whereas a number could indicate another state or country.

It's time to begin exploring the 1950 Census! In researching a distant cousin, Marion Pearson Spain in Palo Alto, Jasper Cty, Iowa, I found him living on a dairy farm with his wife, Inez Vera Wilson, and 6 of their children. The census takers asked whether each family member worked outside the home and it was recorded that three of the children were marked as "OT." It appears that Dale (age 18) was paid to help on the dairy farm, but Doris (16) was not. Betty (14) was not listed with a role on the farm so it is unclear what she was doing at this time. It's also unclear whether the youngest siblings (12 and 9yo) were in school or helping on the farm.

For the next several days, I plan do delve into the stack of certificates and documents one of my aunts gave to my mother many years ago. My father enlisted in the US Army in November 1953. He had been a Dump Truck driver and mechanic living in Springfield Ohio at the time, so he was assigned to the 3rd Armored Division, known as the "heavy" armored division containing both medium and light tank battalions. It appears that the "Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic" Course was the first training he completed in Fort Knox, Kentucky. More to come, dear researchers.

Sanford Quinton Spain (1850-1927) is my 2nd cousin 2x removed, the great-grandson of my gggg-Grandfather Hezekiah Spain. I did not have much on him when new DNA matches showed up. Wayne Ronald Jones (1937-2014) is the GG-Grandson of William Crowder, my GGG-Grandfather and served in the U.S. Army Alaska Communications Division in the 1950's-60's. I delved into what this unit was responsible for after finding this poster in 1960 celebrating the Explorer I, the United States' first satellite, Vanguard 1, the fourth satellite, and the TIROS I for tracking weather patterns.

The Tower lineage on my father's mother's side is one of great history dating to the Plymouth Colonies and beyond. Upon discovery of this document, another generation was added. John Tower's (1639-1693) father was John and still lacks birth dates, but those will come soon! Notes of land transfers and compensation show the family lived in the Plymouth Area for several generations after arriving on the ships. To be continued....

Mary Ione Richey Lemon (1855-1927) had 3 daughters with her husband John Fletcher Lemon (1854-1927). I was curious about her due to the nicknames her daughters were given and looked into her further. Her obituary reads, in part "Mary Ione Richey, daughter of Laird Valandingham Richey and Sarah Ann Wolfe, was born January 21, 1855 in Corning, Adams, Iowa. She was the first white child born in Adams County, Iowa." Upon further research, I see that the county was first noted with the founding of a trading post in 1818. After wars with natives, it seems the settlers began logging and trading in earnest around the mid 1830's, though the skirmishes never seem to end. In 1837, John Bourassa Grignon was noted as the first non-Indian child born at 14 Mile Creek in what would later become Adam's County. I find no note of Mary's birth, though. The Natives who were living nearby continued to suffer at the hands of bad deals and broken treaties, but development persisted with mainly French and British settlers. While there is much more to learn about this region, I'm amazed at the story that is just being uncovered, due to a note in a memorial.

The Lemon Family seems to have first married into the Pease family (my father's Mother's branch) in the early 19th century and remains a part of my tree with much to discover. As I being to look into them more, dear researchers, I leave you with this photograph of John Frederick Lemon and his dog. (1827-1909)

Operation Avalanche was the codename for the Allied landings near the port of Salerno, on 9 September 1943, part of the Allied invasion of Italy. This photograph of Bill (William Harold) Shafer (1922-1983) fifth from left on the bow, is particularly intense and up close. This are British troops being unloaded onto German occupied territory after the Italians agreed to pull out. Bill Shafer married Garnett Louise Dean (1924-1998) two years after this photo was taken. Garnett Dean was my first cousin on my fathers Grandmother's side.

Dr. Charles Lyle Spain (1869-1950) appears to have been a passionate educator, by the accounts that I have read. Born in South Bend, IN, he and his wife Anna Ruby Elliott eventually landed in Detroit, MI. Dr. Spain was a proponent of "Platoon Schools" which rotated children around in groups to use various areas. He was also known for his progressive ideas about the role of art, music, physical education, theater arts and the school library in elementary education. Charles L Spain Elementary-Middle School in the Detroit Public School system received a much needed monetary boost in 2016 in an ongoing effort to rebuild the support systems for Detroit's residents.

Mary Francis (Polly) Rogers (1861-1911) married my 6th cousin twice removed John Lewis Spain (1860-1919). However, their love story was complicated and another suitor came between them. During their engagement, Warren Calvin French told Polly lies that caused her to break up with John. When she discovered his lies, she divorced Warren and married her true love. I've not yet found records to support this story, but it sure is sweet! And this photo makes me curious, both because of her smiling expression and the magazine on her lap!

You've probably heard of Ellis Island, but do you know about Castle Garden?
"Located in the battery of Lower Manhattan, just across the bay from Ellis Island, Castle Garden was the nation’s first immigrant processing facility. Unfortunately most of Castle Gardens’ records were lost in a fire at Ellis Island in 1897, but it is estimated that between eight and twelve million immigrants came through its walls between 1855 and 1890." One famous immigrant who came through Castle Garden was Harry Houdini!
"The difference between the United States’ immigration polices during the times of Castle Garden and Ellis Island was great. During the time of Castle Garden immigration, there was essentially an “open door” policy where if an immigrant could pay to make their way to the United States, they could live here. There were no Visas and no passports... There was little to no government assistance during the mid-19th century, which made life, especially life in a tenement, very difficult indeed."
