There is little to no research linking relaxin to pelvic pain in pregnancy.
There is an association between pelvic girdle pain and pelvic floor tenderness. Stress plays a huge role in pelvic girdle pain as emotional distress, anxiety, and stress are strong prognostic indicators of ongoing disability in PPGP.
There is something called the pelvic stress reflex response where the pelvic floor muscles contract in response to physical or mental, or perceived stress! This can lead to increased tension and tenderness in the pelvic floor muscles, which can influence pelvic pain.
So, what can we do to improve pelvic girdle pain?!
“Calm things down, build things back up” - Greg Lehman
1. Calm things down/calm the nervous system down
We can use manual therapy techniques and vagus nerve exercises to calm the nervous system and reduce stress to the system.
2. Build things up
We can use specific movement and lifestyle changes to help build back resilience to the system and reduce pain.
