Join us for this special FREE event as we celebrate the benefits and address breastfeeding challenges with others from the Black community, Saturday, August 23, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Our theme this year is to Celebrate the Milestones of Breastfeeding. We celebrate ALL milestones starting from pre-natal education and feeding choice, skin to skin and offering colostrum as baby's first food at birth during the Golden Hour, to supporting position and latch, any of the possible speedbumps that could occur during the journey; allergies, teething, growth spurts, to parent led or baby led weaning after the age of 2, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Starting this month, we're pleased to be hosting a new POEM support group for pregnant and postpartum moms on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month from 6:30 to 8:00pm. The group will meet at our Center for Families, 1046 Brown Street in Dayton.

POEM -- Perinatal Outreach & Encouragement for Moms -- is Mental Health America of Ohio’s perinatal mental health program. (Perinatal = the period of time from the start of a pregnancy up to a year after giving birth.) Support group sessions will be moderated by mothers who have gone through the POEM peer support group training program.

You don't need to preregister to attend. Childcare is not available, but babies in arms are welcome. For more information, please call 937.660.9220 or email poemdayton@mhaohio.org.

Did you know that prenatal breastfeeding education can help avoid and navigate breastfeeding difficulties that occur in the first few hours after birth that could impact your feeding journey for weeks?

I am Michelle Wilson, a Registered Nurse Certified Lactation Counselor. As I work to advance towards International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, you have the opportunity to book a free Virtual Prenatal Lactation session with me, overseen by an IBCLC, at no charge!

We’ll discuss:
-milk production
-Golden Hour
-what to do in case of complications
-YOUR infant feeding goals, and how to meet those goals.

Topics can include pumping and safe formula preparation as well as lactation, if you intend to, or are curious about, combination feeding.

Because visits are coordinated with my IBCLC mentor, we request three days’ notice for scheduling. Appointments are available at 7:30 pm on weekdays. You can request this free service by texting me at 614-289-8669. Please include your estimated due date and two preferred options for your class date. Upon confirmation of your appointment, I will send you the link for your virtual appointment.

I love how he explains this. No one has ever told me about the three stages of a collision before, so that really helped me understand better why this advice is given, and think about applying it to older children and adults in the car as well.
