"For many of us, this Advent season may not only be a season of waiting for the birth of Christ, but also a season of waiting because of infertility.

Perhaps you wish you were in a season of pregnancy, but instead are in a season of trying to conceive, waiting for a baby, and wondering if it’s going to happen for you.

Maybe you find yourself surrounded by couples who are waiting in hopeful anticipation for the birth of their own child, and wish you were waiting like them and like the Blessed Virgin Mary.

During this Advent season, as a Christian and as a person simply going through life, I’m sure you may be keenly aware of your present season of waiting for a child."

Sometimes in a season of infertility/loss, we find ourselves dealing with insensitive comments or needing to establish a boundary with family members or friends.

Balancing self-care and charity can be difficult, so we wanted to have this conversation with Edward Luersman - Christian Therapist in OH & FL before the holidays!

In honor of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month and Remembrance Day (October 15), I wrote a blog post about my experience of several pregnancy losses while experiencing infertility. More raw and personal than my typical blog posts, I hope that my personal story resonates with others who have lost a baby, especially those people also going through infertility, helps others to feel less alone, and helps the cause of building awareness of the complex experience that can come with losing a baby.

"In the midst of the grief, we have also worked to honor our children and maintain a relationship with them, for they still are a great gift to us.

We named each of our babies, have had Masses said for them, pray for them, try to bond with them as much as we can, and ask for their intercession daily.

As far as loved ones go, it is honestly relieving when they mention our children, use their names, or call them to mind, although there is less of that than at first.

Although it is mysterious and 'different' to have our children on the other side of eternity, we have great hope in their salvation and that we will reunite with them someday."

I’m grateful to be joining and speaking at this year’s Wave of Light event organized by Back In His Arms Again! Join us to commemorate our babies lost through pregnancy loss or infant loss, on the grounds of The Garden of the Holy Innocents where so many such babies are buried. All families grieving and remembering a baby are welcome!

Incredibly thankful for the warm hospitality from the Diocese of Cleveland this past weekend! It was a pleasure and privilege to collaborate with you to bring comfort and compassion to families in NE Ohio facing the heartbreak of infertility and/or the loss of a baby or child! I was especially struck by the wonderful receptivity of the lay church ministers who came to my training to learn how to better accompany such families in their own ministries. Special thanks to Terri Yohman in the Marriage and Family Ministry Office and Michelle Nowak in the Lay Ecclesial Ministry Office for organizing my trip!
