Public Service Announcement: Let’s Get Relationship Terms Straight!
Confused about all the non-monogamous lingo out there? Don’t worry — we’ve got you covered. Here’s a quick guide to keep your heart, your head, and your group chat from spinning in circles:
Swinging
This isn’t a free-for-all. Swinging is *consensual partner swapping, think of it as sharing each other with others for intimate fun. It’s social, recreational, and focused on physical connection with others, with your partner in the know and usually along for the ride.
Open Relationships
Now this is about freedom,but with boundaries. In an open relationship, your primary partner knows you’re dating or seeing others, but it’s usually done separately. There’s sharing, but not necessarily blending. It's love with a hall pass- not a group project.
Polyamory
Poly is a LOVE STYLE. It’s about building emotional, romantic connections with more than one person, with full transparency and consent. Everyone knows, everyone’s included. It’s less “you do your thing, I do mine” and more “let’s build this beautiful, multi-hearted mess together.”
So next time someone calls swinging “just open dating without rules,” feel free to gently remind them:
