Dear Amazing Parents,
First, let me say you’re doing an incredible job! Watching your child grow and develop is such a special journey, but we know it can also bring questions and concerns—especially when it comes to language development. While every child follows their own unique path, there are common language milestones that help guide us in understanding if your little one is progressing as expected. These milestones are not set in stone, but they can give you a general sense of when it might be time to seek extra support.

Here are some suggestions for eliciting language in the grocery store.
1. Label the items that you put in your cart with your child.
2. Explain the concept of one, some, rest, and all when putting objects on the conveyor belt, pulling them off the shelves, or putting them in the cart.
3. Ask your child to grab something off the shelf and put it in the cart or take something out of the cart and put it on the conveyor belt, list the object by name.
4. Have your child request one item that they would like to purchase or a meal item they would like to have.
5. Talk to your child about what they like to eat. Ask them yes or no questions based on food items that you may come across in the store.
6. Have your child demonstrate what they do not like and what they do not want to eat.
7. Ask simple questions and have a conversation if possible about different items that you may come across that they may not know a lot about. Ask them simple questions as far as the color or the shape or the size etc.
Parents, they should be a casual interaction, not a drill. Make it a learning style where you are explaining to them different aspects of the shopping process, the food that you’ve come across, how you pay for items, etc.
Make it fun! Everyday activities are great ways to elicit communication from your little people!
