FAQ Friday!
The most important thing to remember, is that everyone’s healing journey is different so timelines will vary from person to person. Here is a general timeline of events that you might expect.
✔️ Before being fit, your surgical site needs time to heal. This can take 4 to 8 weeks depending on your health and any complications.
✔️ Once healed, you will be evaluated and fitted for a shrinker to shape and prepare your residual limb.
✔️ You will then be evaluated by your prosthetist and psychiatrist to properly document the need for your prosthesis and satisfy insurance requirements. Paperwork will be sent into the insurance company for approval. This usually takes about 2 weeks for approval, but could take much longer if the claim is denied.
✔️ While we are waiting for approval, we will cast or scan your land and begin making your initial prosthesis. There are several steps to make your final prosthesis, including, casting, trial fittings, and finally the delivery of your leg. This process can take between 2 to 4 weeks.
✔️ You can expect to receive your first prosthesis within 6 to 12 weeks post surgery, but this varies based on your healing, insurance and situation
Remember, getting the right fit takes time and adjustments—and that is okay. This is a journey, not a sprint!
