As the school year winds down, it is time to shift your focus for end of year meetings to ensure a successful year for next year and a stress free summer break!
A few key components of your child's IEP that you should be focused on right now include Extended School Year (ESY) Services and Natural Transition Planning.
Here is what you need to know:
Extended School Year (ESY): ESY is not "summer school"—it is a continuation of special education services designed to prevent the progress your child made during the year from being jeopardized. Eligibility is an individualized decision and should not be limited to specific disability categories or administrative convenience.
Natural Transition Points: If your child is moving from preschool to elementary, elementary to middle, or middle to high school, now is a great time to meet with the IEP team to ensure a smooth and effective transition of services and placements tailored to their new environment.
Postsecondary Transition: For students turning 16 (or younger in some states), the IEP must include measurable goals and results-oriented services to prepare them for life after high school, including further education, employment, and independent living.
Exceptional Advocacy Tip: If the school refuses a service or change you believe is necessary, they are required to provide you with Prior Written Notice explaining their rationale. Request this in writing following any meeting.
Has your child met their IEP goals this year? Are they reaching a milestone? Reach out us at EAS today to ensure that their plan is ready for the journey ahead! You do not have to do this alone!
