Problem gambling doesn’t discriminate—and it can start earlier than many realize. 📱

The 2022 Ohio Gambling Survey found that nearly 1 in 4 young adults (ages 18–24) are at high risk, but experts say gambling behaviors can begin as early as middle school. With developing brains and easy access to apps that mirror video games, youth are especially vulnerable to risky behaviors and addiction.

That’s why the DBH and partners are working to prevent youth gambling through initiatives like ChangeTheGameOhio.org and Pause Before You Play, helping students and families build awareness, set boundaries, and access support.

Gambling can impact mental health, relationships, and finances—and anyone can be affected, regardless of age or background. Early awareness and intervention make a difference.

If you or someone you know needs support, call or text 988 or contact the Ohio Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-589-9966. Help is free, confidential, and available 24/7.

Governor Mike DeWine has declared March to be Problem Gambling Awareness Month. This month serves as a prime opportunity to raise awareness, educate the public, and highlight critical prevention and treatment resources. At the 2026 Ohio Problem Gambling Conference, DBH Director Tia Marcel Moretti accepted the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio's Award of Excellence on behalf of DeWine, recognizing his leadership in advancing responsible gambling policies in Ohio. Governor DeWine was honored for actions that set a national standard, including prohibiting sports betting advertising on college campuses, partnering with the NCAA to ban college prop bets, and collaborating with Major League Baseball.

In opening remarks to more than 300 attendees at the annual event hosted by PGNO, Director Moretti reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting Ohioans affected by gambling addiction and protecting those most at risk. She also presented PGNO Executive Director Derek Longmeier with a proclamation declaring March as Problem Gambling Awareness Month.
