ACOG reaffirms the safety and benefits of acetaminophen use during pregnancy.
More than two decades of research have found no causal link between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability in children. Acetaminophen continues to be an important and safe option for managing pain and fever in pregnancy—conditions that can pose serious risks to pregnant patients and their fetuses if left untreated. Please remember to wear your sunscreen while outside.
SPF 30 or higher applied 20 minutes prior to going outside.
Reapply at least every 2 hours but if you are in the water or sweating reapply sooner.
Sun protective clothing is also great.
Sunglasses protect your eyes from sun damage so remember those as well.
If you or your child does become sunburned, drink lots of fluids. Tylenol or motrin can help with the pain as well.
If you have blisters, try not to pop them .

Sunscreen can help protect the skin from sunburn and some skin cancers but only if used correctly. Keep in mind that sunscreen should be used for sun protection, not as a reason to stay in the sun longer.

A possible case of measles is being investigated in Lee County by the Alabama Department of Public Health in a child that is too young to be vaccinated. They are in the process of tracking down of possible exposures.
We are monitoring the situation and will up date in office screening and check in procedures if necessary. Currently changes aren’t needed but safety in our office is a high priority so we will update you as more is known.

Update: Thankfully the measles tests were negative. If you have questions about the measles or your child’s vaccine status, give the office a call.

It's summer which means people are at the pool, beach, lake and river.
While water activities are great, they can be dangerous.
Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of death by unintentional injury in children ages 5-14 and is the number 1 cause of death in children ages 1-4.
88% of drownings occur with an adult present in the area. Drowning can be fatal or non fatal. Dry drowning is not a real medical term. If your child inhales water and is having difficulty breathing, a fast rate of breathing or persistent coughing seek medical care.
If you are at the water with your child, an adult needs to be assigned to watch the children constantly. They need to have their full attention on the water and children at all times as drowning can go unnoticed as it is often a very quiet process. If the water watcher needs a break then a new adult needs to be assigned that role.

Floaties are NOT sufficient protection against drowning. Life jackets are should be worn on boats and near bodies of water. Ensure your child has a properly fitted life jacket by weight.
