"Those who have the strength and the love to sit with a dying patient in the silence that goes beyond words will know that this moment is neither frightening nor painful, but a peaceful cessation of the functioning of the body. Watching a peaceful death of a human being reminds me of a falling star-one of the million lights in a vast sky that flares up for a brief moment only to disappear into the endless night. To be with a dying patient makes us conscious of the uniqueness of the individual in this vast sea of humanity, aware of our finiteness, our limited lifespan. Few of us live beyond our three score years and ten, yet in this brief time most of us create and live a unique biography, and weave ourselves into the fabric of history.

What is a Death Doula?
A non medical person who comes alongside an individual and their loved ones before, during and after death. They provide emotional and spiritual support. An End of Life Doula is trained to help individuals process terminal diagnosis or just prepare for the future. This may include such things as assisting with a legacy project, thinking through advanced directives, vigil, memorial and funeral planning, navigating hospice and palliative care as well as education on death and dying and being present with someone during the active dying process. A Death Doula also is there for short term grief support after a death. They can compliment Hospice but a person does not need to be on Hospice to have an End of Life Doula.
