National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT)

National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) The Nation's EMS Certification Today, more than 500,000 EMS clinicians are certified by the National Registry.

The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (National Registry) is the non-profit Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Certification organization for the United States. Its mission is to provide a valid, uniform process to assess the knowledge and skills required for competent practice by EMS clinicians throughout their careers, and to maintain a registry of certification status. All 50 states recognize National Registry certification, while 48 states use National Registry certification as a basis for licensure. EMS clinicians at the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced EMT (AEMT) and Paramedic levels work in a variety of capacities throughout the nation as first responders, in hospitals and medical facilities, in schools and colleges, with the police and military and in many other settings.

How can the National Registry ensure every voice connected to certification is heard at the highest level? In this episode of Registry Insider, host Bill Seifarth and Board Chair Dr. Scott Gilmore discuss the introduction of a new advisory group that creates a direct line of feedback to the Board of Directors before key decisions are made. This group reflects the full EMS community, including EMR, EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic, across both volunteer and career roles. It also includes educators, employers, and partner organizations who prepare, support, and rely on certified Clinicians every day. The result is a more informed and transparent process that ensures the perspectives of those closest to the work help guide the future of certification.

Daring to say yes to unconventional partnerships is the first step in solving the most complex community health crises.

In this episode of Registry Insider, Nate Metz explains how Phoenix Paramedic Solutions became the only healthcare entity willing to hire peers in recovery to address the opioid epidemic. While other organizations remained uncertain due to the backgrounds of those in recovery, this pilot program proved that taking a chance on unconventional partners can lead to significant clinical impact. This bold move highlights how a Clinician can lead the way in behavioral health by breaking down professional barriers and embracing compassionate, innovative care models.

In this episode, National Registry Research Fellow Jacob Kamholz explores a national study on how pain is managed in the field. The research analyzed over 35,000 EMS records of adult patients with confirmed long bone fractures. By linking EMS data with hospital diagnoses, researchers were able to precisely identify the injuries treated by each Clinician. The study utilized the CDC Social Vulnerability Index to account for factors like income and education levels within different communities. Researchers examined whether the administration of pain medication varied across different patient groups while controlling for age, injury location, and transport time. This methodology ensures a comprehensive look at how care is delivered in various environments. The findings indicate that differences in treatment exist within the out-of-hospital setting. These variations were not explained by patient preferences or clinical contradictions.

We invite you to listen to the full episode to learn how data can help the EMS community continue to provide high-quality care for every patient.

What happens to healthcare innovation when we stop working in isolation and start collaborating to solve the toughest community problems?

In this segment of Registry Insider, Nate Metz explains how the siloing of healthcare entities often prevents the discovery of new, effective solutions. By bringing passionate individuals together and leveraging Indiana’s "floor" scope of care, Metz’s team found the flexibility needed for a Paramedic to practice at the highest level. This collaborative approach highlights the critical role a Clinician plays when granted the professional freedom to address complex patient needs beyond the traditional 911 environment.

Our Story

It has been nearly five decades since President Lyndon Johnson's Committee on Highway Traffic Safety recommended the creation of a national certification agency to establish uniform standards for training and examination of personnel active in the delivery of emergency ambulance service. The result of this recommendation was the inception of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (The Registry) in 1970. Prior to the 1970’s, a national certification standard for emergency medical care did not exist. Since then, The Registry has certified over two million EMS providers. Today, over 330,000 individuals are Nationally Certified at the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced-EMT (AEMT), or Paramedic level. Entry requirements for national EMS certification include completing a state-approved EMS education course, and passing the National Registry cognitive and psychomotor examinations.
