📢 October is SIDS Awareness Month

The Mansfield Police Department joins in raising awareness about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and promoting safe sleep practices for infants. Every parent, caregiver, and community member plays a role in keeping babies safe. 💙💗

Here are a few reminders and tips:

Always place babies on their backs to sleep; for naps and overnight.
Use a firm, flat sleep surface (like a safety-approved crib mattress).
Keep the sleep area free of loose bedding, pillows, toys, and bumper pads.
Room-share, not bed-share; keep your baby’s sleep space in the same room you sleep in for the first 6 months (or longer).
Avoid exposing infants to smoke, alcohol, and illicit drugs; these increase the risk of SIDS.
Offer a pacifier at nap time and bedtime (once breastfeeding is well established).
Ensure your baby gets regular prenatal care and well-baby checkups.

A big CONGRATULATIONS goes out to occupational therapist extraordinaire, Miss Jennifer! Jennifer joined the SST team in October of 2024 and has been proudly
representing SST in the schools and clinic ever since! According to SST President, Melanie Shultz, Jennifer is an “invaluable member of the SST team. She is a tremendously
skilled therapist and a seasoned professional. She is passionate and cares deeply for those around her. We are beyond lucky to have someone like her represent SST.”
Occupational Therapy Department Head, Katie Finnegan, had similar praise for our SSTar. “This October, we’re celebrating Jennifer’s one-year anniversary with SST! From day
one, she jumped right in and made such a positive impact. Jennifer is the kind of teammate who’s always ready to help, encourage others, and share her ideas. She’s also an
incredible OT—her skills shine every day, and it’s no surprise that school staff and clinic families can’t stop singing her praises. We are so grateful Jennifer took the leap to join us
last year, and we can’t wait to see all the amazing things she’ll continue to do in the years ahead!”
A Buckeye through and through, Jennifer was born and raised in Columbus, OH! An alumnus of both St. Andrews and Bishop Watterson, it was a no-brainer for Jennifer to
continue her studies at The Ohio State University where she received her undergraduate degree in Human Ecology, with a specialty in Family Studies. While working towards her
master’s degree in occupational therapy, Jennifer was employed as the lead preschool teacher in a local daycare. “I came from a family of educators, so being in the classroom
always seemed like a natural fit to me.” Despite her family connection to education, Jennifer knew from a young age that a career in occupational therapy would be her ultimate
end goal. “I took an aptitude test when I was thirteen and it said I was well-suited for occupational therapy. Luckily, I had an uncle who was an OT at Riverside Hospital, and I was
able to shadow him. From there, I never wavered. I knew I was meant to be an OT.” When Jennifer began her Level 1 field work in pediatrics, everything came together. “It was
like my two worlds collided. I was still in the classroom but was able to incorporate my OT training in a way where I felt as though I could positively impact my students. I knew I
had found my purpose.” Not surprisingly, Jennifer was offered a job on the spot following her field work and has been happily serving in the schools ever since. “It is so
rewarding being able to apply my background in education while teaching functional life skills in the classroom setting. I also love that I can work with an entire interdisciplinary
team, such as intervention specialists, other therapists, general educators, behavioral specialists, etc., to really get a complete picture of the child. I feel like we are serving the
entire child which is a great sense of accomplishment.”
When not at SST, Jennifer enjoys spending time with her family. Her son, Samuel, is five years old and has just started kindergarten. Her daughter, Caroline, is three and
in pre-school. Jennifer proudly describes her children as her “little miracles.” After losing her first husband in 2012 and struggling to get pregnant throughout her marriage, she
thought carrying a child was just not in the cards. Jennifer went on to push herself to the limit by competing in three full Ironman competitions, twelve half Ironman’s, and a
120-mile bike ride. However, Jennifer never got the notion of motherhood out of her system and eventually became a single foster mom to two toddlers. While juggling all the
craziness of her life, Jennifer noticed that her feelings had changed towards Pete, one of her Ironman training partners. The two started as friends, then began dating, fell in
love, and eventually married in 2018. Two years later they welcomed their first little miracle, Samuel, and their second miracle, Caroline, two years later. To say Jennifer and
Pete are blessed would be an understatement!
It is no wonder Miss Jennifer inspires us all to be the best version of ourselves! What a deserving SSTar you are!
Congratulations Jennifer! Thank you for all you bring to SST!

Congratulations to Mason L. for being selected as our SSTAR of the month!!
Mason was nominated for this honor by occupational therapist, Katie Finnegan. Miss Katie states, “I’ve had the privilege
of working with Mason since April 2024, and he and his family have been such a joy from the very start.” Furthermore,
Miss Katie feels, “Mason has made incredible progress toward his OT goals—he comes to each session ready to work
hard, learn, and of course, play! His determination shines through, and the support his family provides at home has
played a big role in his success.” Overall, Miss Katie “couldn’t be prouder to celebrate Mason as our SSTAR for October.
He has truly earned this honor, and it’s been such a joy to watch his growth along the way! 🌟”
Way to go, Mason!
Mason L. is a super-sweet, five-year-old who loves to have fun! During his school day, he likes to work on his letters.
(Miss Katie is so proud!) Outside of school, you can find Mason swimming and playing games. During his down time,
Mason enjoys watching his favorite shows, “Bluey” or “Mario.” He also loves spending time with his siblings, Evan and
Paige, and his dog, Daisy. Mason’s favorite fall activity is to pick out pumpkins. For Halloween, Mason is still deciding on
whether he will dress up as a zombie or a LEGO man! (Hopefully, he will wear his costume into the clinic so we can see
what he picks!) If Mason was to win one million dollars, he would use the money to “buy popsicles and some toys!” If
Mason’s parents were to describe him in one word, the word they would choose is “jovial.” They state, “Mason always
wakes up smiling and ready for the day. He is overall a happy and playful kid who tries his best. And, even when things
are hard, he still usually has a smile on his face.”
Congratulations Mason!
We love seeing your smile in the clinic!

A big CONGRATULATIONS goes out to our newest speech-language pathologist, Vaselea (Lea) Mathias, for being selected as our Staff SSTar! Miss Lea is about to celebrate her one-year anniversary with SST, and we could not be more thrilled to honor such an amazing, young therapist! Miss Lea has not only represented SST in the schools this past year but recently stepped in to cover a full clinic schedule over the summer as well! According to SST team member, Marla Marrero, Miss Lea’s transition to the clinic was “seamless and beyond impressive.” She states, “I have seen much more seasoned therapists crack under the weight of such a quick transition, but Lea handled everything we threw at her with professionalism well beyond her years. I am so thrilled she is being honored.” SST Speech Department Head, Mona Mehta, is equally impressed with Miss Lea’s growth throughout her clinical fellowship year. “Lea has come a long way from where she began her CF year to the completion. She has exhibited positive growth in her skills. She is excellent with our little learners and works well with them. Lea is a very calm and composed individual! She is ready to take up challenges presented to her! Lea is very respectful and communicates well with her colleagues! We are very happy to have Lea as part of our SST team.” In addition, SST president, Melanie Shultz, describes Lea as “a very kind, understanding, and compassionate SLP!” Furthermore, Miss Melanie feels that although Lea is “relatively new to the field of speech-language pathology, she has steadily built her skill set and therapeutic knowledge as she serves a wide variety of clients both in our clinic and school assignments.” Furthermore, Miss Melanie is proud to report that “the Director of Special Education from her school assignment felt as though Lea gained so much confidence as the year progressed and was very impressed with the level of interaction she witnessed with her students, teachers and families!”
Way to go! We are so proud of you, Lea, and are very fortunate to have you on our SST Team!
Miss Lea was born and raised in the city of Bay Village, just west of Cleveland, OH. During her high school years, Miss Lea enjoyed performing in various singing groups, such as show choir and a capella choir. Her musical talents also extended to the school musical, Wizard of Oz, where she was featured as both a flying monkey and a flower! (No wonder she is so good at multitasking!) As she was finishing high school, Miss Lea debated between a career in teaching or as a speech-language pathologist. “During that time in my life, I felt as though God had sent all these amazing people to me in order to share their many inspiring stories on how their lives had been impacted through speech therapy. But most inspirational, was hearing my dad and younger sister talk about their personal struggles with speech. At that point, I knew where my career path would take me.” Miss Lea went on to receive both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Cleveland State. During her time at Cleveland State, Miss Lea got the opportunity to be placed in an elementary school setting. There, she truly felt as though she could positively impact children by helping them with their speech goals while still supporting them in their education, thus combining her two career ambitions. Miss Lea was hired by Specialized Speech Technologies shortly after graduation and knowing she would be able to start her career as a speech-language pathologist in the schools seemed like the perfect opportunity. “This past year in the schools has been wonderful and I have learned so much. But I also love that at SST I can practice in the clinic as well. It is the best of both worlds!”
When not representing SST, Miss Lea enjoys spending quality time with her husband, Grant. The two met online during the pandemic and were married in 2022. Grant works as both an x-ray service engineer and as a personal chef. Needless to say, having a chef husband is the epitome of living the dream. Miss Lea states, “I haven’t cooked a dinner more than twice in the past three years. I have it so good! My favorite things he makes are his banana bread and homemade pasta.” (YUM!) During her off time, Miss Lea can also be found crafting, watching rom-coms, or dabbling in music. “I still enjoy singing and am getting back into piano as well. I think music will always be an important part of my life.” Miss Lea and Grant also enjoy giving their dog Sebastian “Seb” all the love and attention he deserves. The couple adopted their sweet pit bull/lab mix over four years ago and he is “greatly spoiled… as he should be!”
Congratulations Miss Lea! We are so THANKFUL for all you bring to SST!
