Gratitude Challenge Highlight!

This month, we’re celebrating the amazing support tutors give our learners. One learner shared that their tutor helps them with almost everything, especially math, and has even helped them gain confidence counting money.

Their favorite part? A tutor who cheers them on, like going to watch them dance on stage, and helps them accomplish milestones like tying their own shoes for the first time.

We’re so thankful for tutors who bring patience, encouragement, and friendship to every session. Thank you for helping learners grow, feel confident, and celebrate their successes!

We love stories like this. One of our adult learners worked with their tutor to get their library card reinstated after years of barriers, like old fines or even improper documentation for address changes.

The process took weeks and required documentation, persistence, and some advocacy. A library manager learned about our program during the process and was moved by the dedication they saw. The remaining fee was waived, and the learner walked away with full access to the library again.

We are SO GRATEFUL to the many libraries around the state who have opened their doors (and study rooms!) to learners and tutors in our program.

Reason number 1,000,000 we got rid of overdue fines: this 93-year-old reader got to finish their book 🥹

When Sarah joined Adult Literacy Ohio, her goals were simple but powerful: “get better with my words and get better at writing.” Lessons were customized to include some of her passions including Ohio history and the Titanic. This experience helped her build new vocabulary, strengthen her writing, and even improve executive functioning skills like time management and using public transportation.

Today, Sarah is channeling that same creativity and determination into her family’s candle-making business, Joyous Creations inspired by Sarah. Many of the scents comes with a story inspired by her experiences, making storytelling a key part of her brand’s signature.

This Small Business Saturday, we’re celebrating entrepreneurs like Sarah and her family who turn their passions into purpose!
