Following a family recipe. Asking for help less at work. Understanding the trail maps at a favorite metro park. Texting a significant other. Reading a bedtime story to a younger relative. These are all real reasons that adults have signed up for Adult Literacy Ohio.

The global literacy rate for adults with disabilities is a staggering 3%. This is linked to diminished earning potential, poorer health outcomes, and reduced levels of independence.

One of our former learners said it best: this program is a game-changer.

ElevateDD is doing work to change the conversation about what can happen when adults are given the right supports to improve their reading, writing, and communication skills.

Throwback Thursday!

Jenny has tackled a variety of goals through Adult Literacy Ohio, and we’re so proud of how far she’s come!

When we asked what she enjoys most about the program, she said:

Our Summer Reading Challenge is all about making reading fun, flexible, and just right for you.

We have one learner in our program (so far) who knocked it out of the ballpark and completed EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. You read that right. She used the subtitles on a favorite show, researched places she wanted to visit, shared a calming quote with us, read outside, and more.

Throwback Thursday!

Since starting the program, Candice’s communication skills grew tremendously. She progressed from using single words to independently putting together nine-word thoughts. With visual support and hand-over-hand guidance for capitalization, she began typing words, phrases, and full sentences.

She also used Microsoft Word to create functional lists like shopping needs and ingredients, and confidently navigated the enter, backspace, and delete keys. Her team at Transitions Behavioral Health reported that she became much more confident in her ability to communicate, whether by writing, typing, or using her iPad.

Candice, we are cheering you on every step of the way. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your literacy journey.
