Alliance for Substance Abuse Progress Changing lives through compassion, support, and education in Bartholomew County, IN

With an initial focus on opioids, ASAP is working to develop and implement a data-driven system focused on substance abuse prevention, early intervention, treatment, recovery, and enforcement that substantially reduces the prevalence of substance use disorder (SUD) in Bartholomew County and surrounding areas and helps those with SUD achieve recovery and become or return to being productive, contributing members of their communities.

🚀 Let’s break the stigma. Substance use disorder is a health issue, not a moral failing. By speaking openly and supporting each other, we can make a positive change. Today, let’s challenge the stereotypes and advocate for compassion and understanding. 💜

Stigma can assume many forms. It can appear as prejudice, myths, stereotypes, disapproval, discrimination, fear, shame and distrust.

ASAP trainers are available to provide an informative workshop titled “Reducing Stigma: Seeing Beyond the Addiction” developed by Overdose Lifeline. Learn to recognize stigma and develop healthy habits. This is offered at no cost to organizations in our community. To learn more about this workshop visit our website at www.asapbc.org. To schedule this educational session for your organization contact Tina Snider at tsnider@asapbc.org.

đźš« Don't Jump to Conclusions!

An adult who looks, acts, and sounds drunk may actually be affected by medication.

Prescription drugs are usually more powerful and have more side effects than over-the-counter (OTC) products. However, many OTCs have strong agents and, when taken in large quantities, could equal a dose normally available by prescription.

OTC medications include those commonly found in cupboards like aspirin, vitamins, laxatives, cold remedies, antacids, etc. The high level of prescription and OTC drug use among aging adults dramatically increases their chances of misusing these substances.

Medication misuse is the inappropriate use of legally prescribed drugs intended for therapeutic purposes. These include prescription medications and over the counter (OTC) products. Misuse can be intentional or unintentional and there are various factors that lead to misuse. In some cases, these factors result in overdose and even death. How can this happen?

- Mixing prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and/or alcohol in ways that are dangerous and outside the approval of the physician.
- Sharing medications
- Taking a non-prescribed dosage
- Taking several doses of the same medication or taking medication when it is not needed
- Stretching out medications to last longer or discontinuing use earlier than directed
- Failing to follow instructions, missing doses, taking double doses, taking medication at the wrong time
- Using outdated drugs, not monitoring side effects, or borrowing drugs

For more information on prescription misuse visit the NIDA website www.drugabuse.gov. For more information on local treatment and recovery resources contact ASAP at 812-418-8705. 100% of Rethinking Wellness is sponsored by 100%.

Today we focus on the culture of prescribing. We live in a world where prescription meds are often advertised as the solution to happiness and health. Aging is increasingly medicalized, and the economic pressure of quick appointments in medical care can lead to a “pill for every ill” mentality. It is important for everyone to be mindful of the medications they are taking, their side effects, how they interact with other meds such as over- the- counter medication.

Medication overload is real but don’t let it become your burden! and ask questions when being prescribed a medication.

ASAP Rethinking Wellness offers a free workshop on Prescription Overdose Awareness. To bring this workshop to your organization, contact Tina Snider at tsnider@asapbc.org 100% of Rethinking Wellness is sponsored by SAMHSA.
