Gabby Miranda of MUSC College of Health Professions is our SRNA of the Month! Gabby excitedly answered our questions about her journey through nursing school, the Army and now .

1️⃣ A few things motivated me to become a ! I met a CRNA in the Army as we were both attending pre-deployment training. He told me all about the profession and how he manages the care for soldiers as well as local populations in overseas areas. I was truly inspired and started my journey. As I entered nursing school, I had my own surgical experience with the most wonderful who embodied all of my values. I knew I wanted to be just like these two CRNAs when I grew up!

2️⃣ The thing that surprised me the most about CRNA school is how quickly I transitioned from ICU nursing to thinking like an . The intense pace shortened my learning curve, allowing me to become confident and competent in a surprisingly short time. I feel like I’ve grown so much as a health care provider.

3️⃣ So far in my journey as an , I’m most proud of my resilience and determination. As a mom of a 2-year-old and an 8-year-old, it hasn’t been easy. I’ve been able to adapt to intense study hours and travel for clinicals while still being present with my family. Some days, I don’t know how everyone else manages to get everything done in the same 24 hours.

4️⃣ When I’m not studying or in the OR, I enjoy working out, running, and being with my family. I’m so grateful to my husband, who manages everything while I’m away, so I can enjoy being with him and our kids in my free time!

Congrats, Gabby!

Our USC School of Medicine Nurse Anesthesia Program 'SRNA of the Month' is Wes Browning! We asked, and Wes answered some questions about his experiences as a :

1️⃣ What motivated you to pursue nurse anesthesia?

I knew I wanted to work to be an for as long as I can remember. My interest in healthcare really started as a child. My sister and I were very close growing up. She was born blind and had significant medical challenges, and helping her inspired me to help others. My father is also a , so it has been an honor to follow in his footsteps. Nurse anesthesia felt like the perfect fit for me because it combines hands-on patient care, critical thinking, and the ability to make a real impact every day.

2️⃣ What has surprised you most about so far?

The constant level of commitment it takes has been the biggest surprise. I knew it would be tough, but there really is no off switch. You are always studying, preparing, or thinking through cases. It is incredibly demanding, but it has pushed me to grow more than anything else in my career.

3️⃣ What is something you are most proud of in your journey as an up to this point?

🩺 I’m most proud of how my clinical intuition and consistency in the OR have developed. Making the jump from the classroom to managing complex physiology in real time has taken discipline. I’m proud of the growth I’ve shown in those high-pressure situations. I’m also proud of the camaraderie within my cohort. Our class is very close. We’ve pushed each other to improve every day, which has made the experience especially rewarding.

4️⃣ When you are not studying or in the OR, how do you like to recharge or spend your free time?

⛷️Skiing is definitely my favorite thing to do. I actually just got back from a trip to Whistler, British Columbia, with my wife. I also try to stay consistent with working out, which has been really important during such a demanding program. I enjoy golf, family camping trips, and spending time with family and friends.

Congrats, Wes!!!

🔦 S.C.A.N.A.'s CRNA of the Month is Zachery Burns, MSNA, CRNA!

1️⃣ What inspired you to pursue nurse anesthesia, and how has your journey shaped the CRNA you are today?

My aunt was a surgical tech and encouraged me to shadow a CRNA when I was in high school. I met a really cool CRNA during a Vats Procedure and thought to myself that this would be a fun and challenging career. Since completing my training, my journey as a CRNA has taken me across the country to various anesthesia departments. Though the environment changes, the focus of my heart has always been on Jesus, and my desire is to glorify Him through my anesthesia care. Jesus has given me the desire to be the best anesthesia provider, coworker, husband, and father that I am capable of.

2️⃣ What is one part of your practice or training that you’re most passionate about or proud of?

I’m very honored to be trusted to educate and train student nurse anesthetists wherever I practice. I love to challenge my students to tailor their anesthetics to their patients’ specific needs while sharing some of the techniques and tips I’ve learned over the years.

3️⃣ What advice would you give to SRNAs/CRNAs coming behind you?

Welcome to a great, challenging profession that continues to grow you as a practitioner throughout your career. Keep an open mind. Every day is an opportunity to refine your anesthesia technique and learn something new from your colleagues.

4️⃣ Outside of anesthesia, what’s something people might be surprised to learn about you or that you enjoy doing?

I enjoy mountain biking, rock climbing, off-roading and spending time with my family! We love to travel and take every opportunity to do so!

In an emergency situation, the nurse anesthetist provides the critical decision-making and skill that delivers you safely to the recovery room. The laws for written acknowledgment a physician "supervised" a CRNA in SC are outdated. 💙Every patient deserves to feel safe and supported. During Patient Safety Awareness Week, we’re highlighting the vigilance and expertise CRNAs bring to the operating room every single day. Safety isn’t just a priority—it’s our promise.

When CRNAs practice to the full scope of their training, patient outcomes improve and care becomes more accessible.

Representation isn't just a buzzword—it’s the foundation of trust in patient care. Shaundra Davis Jones honors two African American pioneers who paved the way for CRNAs like her.

Shaundra's goal is simple: to keep advancing representation in our profession so every student and patient feels seen. 🩺💪🏾
