All of us at St. Francis-Emory Healthcare hope your summer has been a healthy and enjoyable one, and we wish you a happy Labor Day.

We’re thankful for all of the hard work and talents our neighbors devote to making our community the wonderful place we call home. We especially thank all the healthcare workers in the great states of Georgia and Alabama for all you do for the communities we make healthier together.

For our Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU) team, watching a patient regain their strength and health over time makes the countless hours of care worth every single second.

Patient Tristan Chambers came to our critical care unit in mid-July, transferred to St. Francis-Emory Healthcare after suffering a significant stroke. Initially placed on a ventilator, Chambers started to wake up and respond to treatment. Though very weak on his left side, he began moving. Enter our amazing physical and occupational therapy teams who tapped into his determined spirit to make further improvements, as he “fist bumped” his therapists and nurses with every small win.

“He celebrated an August birthday with us, with many well wishes from staff and continual visits from family,” MSICU’s Kristi Ingurgio, BSN, RN, CCRN says. “He told me he was determined to get back to running, something that he loves to do. When his tracheostomy tube came out (a medical device that allows air to enter the lungs directly to help with breathing), and with the help of our nursing team that had cared for him for more than a month, Tristan stood up and sat in a wheelchair.”

Ingurgio says there was only one destination in mind after that, a trip outside for Chambers to feel the warmth of the sun on his skin again. At that moment, he was the happiest man on earth.

“Every nurse, respiratory therapist and unit secretary took time to see how happy Tristan was just getting to be outside for a few minutes. It took a very busy day and made it great.”

Having a trusted surgeon in your corner is typically not something you think about until you really need one.

Rutvi Patel, MD, an experienced surgeon with St. Francis Center for Surgical Care, recently took time out to discuss the full depth and breath of surgical procedures she performs with WTVM News Leader 9 Health Break. Dr. Patel has specialized skill in diagnosing and repairing hernias (abdominal wall reconstruction) which could present as an uncomfortable “bulge or lump” that can be very painful when coughing or straining.

Dr. Patel also treats Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (also known as GERD) which causes a burning sensation in the chest due to acid reflux. She offers surgical techniques to correct anatomical defects that may be causing GERD in some patients.

120 over 80. Remember those numbers (that should be your targeted blood pressure). If you don’t know your numbers, you may be enabling high blood pressure or hypertension, a silent killer. If your numbers are higher or lower and you aren’t taking appropriate actions, you could be doing the same.

Now is a great time to check your blood pressure and, if needed, seek a medical professional’s advice on how to get your numbers in line. St. Francis-Emory Healthcare can help. If you don’t have a primary care provider, you can find one by visiting MyStFrancis.com/Docs or calling 706-596-4350.

Most people who have high blood pressure do not have any symptoms and have little way of knowing how the condition is potentially damaging.

On this Memorial Day, we pause to reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their bravery has secured the freedoms we hold dear, and their memory lives on in our hearts and communities.

Let us never forget the true cost of freedom, and may we strive each day to be worthy of the sacrifices made on our behalf.
