The Physicians Foundation recently released its 2025 Survey on Physician Autonomy and Impact on Patient Care. Key findings include:

🔎 64% of physicians say limits on autonomy negatively affect the quality and timeliness of patient care, and more than half report declines in patient satisfaction.

🔎 73% report that autonomy limits increase their stress levels, with more than four in ten indicating these pressures are driving them toward career changes or early retirement.

🔎 91% of physicians say the loss of autonomy is a major threat to U.S. medicine and will exacerbate the physician shortage; seven in ten (71%) know colleagues who have already left the profession due to autonomy loss.

This summer, OSMA Foundation Summer Scholar Sarah Dickman joined the research team at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to research groundbreaking therapies for children with neonatal brachial plexus injury, which is the leading cause of pediatric upper limb paralysis.

Her research is uncovering something remarkable: biological s*x may influence how children respond to future therapies, opening doors to more personalized treatment approaches.

The Physicians Foundation announced findings from its 2025 Survey on Physician Autonomy and Impact on Patient Care, revealing a stark new reality: when physicians lose control over how they practice medicine—known as the loss of physician autonomy—patients pay the price.

The survey of more than 1,000 U.S. physicians shows that physicians overwhelmingly view the loss of autonomy as a major threat to the workforce and a key driver of worsening access to care.

There has been a huge amount of legislative activity over the past two weeks on OSMA-supported insurance reform proposals in both the Ohio House and Ohio Senate, with many committee hearings held regarding these important insurance issues.

Several OSMA physician members also took the opportunity to get involved and give testimony to our elected officials about how critical these issues are and their impact on patient care.

It's been a busy month for OSMA Advocacy!

OSMA President Dr. John Bastulli testified in support of SB 162, which would limit the timeframe of health insurance takebacks, promoting fairness and financial stability for Ohio physicians. OSMA member Dr. Alan Levy joined him at the Statehouse and helped OSMA in advocacy efforts regarding HB 219, which would establish network adequacy standards for commercial health insurance.

OSMA member physicians Drs. Maria Phillis, Tani Malhotra, David Hackney and Amy Burkett participated in the Ohio ACOG Advocacy Day at the Statehouse, meeting with legislators and advocating for their patients and profession.

Physicians representing OSMA and the Ohio Ophthalmological Society, including Drs. Nicole Bajic, Adrienne Delaney, Aleksandra Rachitskaya and Kenneth Cahill, testified to express opposition and patient safety concerns regarding SB 36, which would expand the scope of practice of optometrists.

Thank you to all the advocates who showed up, spoke out, and kept physician-led, patient-centered care front and center.
