My Italian Roots

My Italian Roots An exploration of the Italian roots of my mother's family in Central Ohio and beyond! Verrilli and Columbro, but the vowels don't end there!

Those that want to contribute photos and information are welcome. Grandpa Tony always said we're all cousins!

Is this a photo? Is this a painting? The intrigue in this image makes the researcher in me want to know more about Ferdinando Russo (1837-1921) and his family. Ferdinando, his wife Maria Pasquala, his 6 daughters and his son were all born in Roseto Valfortore, Provincia di Foggia, Puglia, Italy. The entire family immigrated to Roseto, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, around 1891. Maria Pasquala Casciano (1846-1916) was my 1st cousin 5x's removed through my great grandmother Columbro's mother's branch following the Capones through to the Cascianos.

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a program instituted by President Roosevelt in 1933 as part of the New Deal Program designed to lift Americans out of the Great Depression. I have known that my Grandfather Verrilli was in CCC 531, but there was little other information. Today, I came across newsletters written by members of the CCC that shed light on it but also posed more questions. My Grandfather spoke of spending time in California clearing forests and eating squirrels, but I have found that he was also in Idaho! Pritchard, Idaho! I am still reading through information, but I have determined that he was there in 1937 and may have arrived the previous year. There are still many details to investigate, but I am thrilled by what I have found.
Attached are images from the cover as well as a mention of him in a segment called "Through the Keyhole."

This photo caught my attention purely out of wonder that little Luigi was going to fall off of the precarious platform he was balancing on. Features in this photo are Maria Filippa Carrescia Visingaldi (1880-1952), her daughter Lucy (1908-1968) and Luigino (1907-1975) Mary was born in Roseto, Valfortore, Italy to Vito and Teodora featured earlier this month! The black band on her left arm is likely the result of a recent death in the family, though who it might be is not yet known. At the time of this photo, the family was living in around Bangor, PA and in all likelihood in the town named after her birthplace - Roseto.
Mary, my 3rd cousin 3xs removed, is related through Grandma Columbro's paternal grandfather's branch.

Meet through the 1920 census, Antonio Leonardo D'Ambrosio (1897-1996). Leonardo was born in Faeto, Italy and emigrated to the United States as a blue-eyed boy in 1913 on the "Sant Anna." He petitioned for citizenship while at the same time registering for the draft just four years later. By June of 1919, he married Lucia Joanna Izzi (1900-1980) and is found in the 1920 census at a residence on Kilbourne Street in Columbus, Ohio. His first child, Elizabeth (Betty) D' Ambrosia, was born that same year.
Antonio was the grandson of my 2nd great grandfather, Leonard Domenico(a) D'Ambrosia (b 1843 in Faeto), through the Verrilli branch.

I am ever so grateful for other researchers who translate records for the rest of us to understand. It is because of a distant cousin on my Grandmother Verrilli (Columbro) side that I have learned as mush as I have! This evening, I found the correct death date for my 5th great grandfather, Nicola Falcone (1767-1814) in Roseto Valfortore, Italy. In addition, I learned the names of his parents were Andrea Falcone and Elizabetta Bozzelli! Another branch added to an already challenging part of the family tree!

Photos of day-to-day life are always a treasure. Those that give a glimpse of our Ancestors ordinary lives. A photo of what may be Orazio Vagnoni (1887-1947) and Luigi Salvatore Condatore (1901-1972) at Apollo Market is one example. The location may have in the Washington DC or Maryland area, where they all lived. Orazio and Luigi were the husbands of my 1st cousins 3x's removed, sisters Maria Carmela Capone (1901-2001) and Maria Filomena Capone (1899-2003). The sisters were the grandaughters of my 3rd great Grandfather, Fillipatano Capone (b1824).

If not for the cousins who share photos of their Great-great-grandparents, the rest of the world would not get any glimpses into our own past. Here we meet Teodora Sabetti Carrescia Falcon (1856-1940) and her third husband Michaelangelo Carrescia (1863-1954) Her first marriage was to Michaelangelo's brother, Vito, in Italy. But he passed away in 1901 and Teodora married Gregory Falcone in Pennsylvania several years later. After Gregory passed, she married one final time in 1930.

Orazia Grazia Falcone, my 5th great grandmother (1755-1832 in Roseto Valfortore , Foggia, Puglia, Italy has been quite the catalyst for connection in the last few weeks! I possess no photos at this time, however her name appears on many documents like this one. She and Filippo Sabetti (1757-1833) had only 7 children, but their offspring have connected to 4 new living cousins this month!
No doubt this is just a drop in the bucket. Keep researching, cousins!

This photo caught my eye this evening, for so many reasons. The smile, the head tilt, the dress and beautiful dark hair. This is Catherine Maria Vagnoni Rose (1917-2014) and my 2nd cousin 2x's removed through the Columbro branch. Catherine marries Norman Rose; actor, film narrator and radio announcer who was described as "the Voice of God."
Catherine studied painting, was an avid gardener and a gourmet cook. She sounds like someone I'd have enjoyed knowing!

This photo was found in the tree of a fellow researcher and immediately brought back memories of a variety of Italian Festivals. Maria Carmela Capone Vagnoni (1901-2001) 1st Cousin 3x removed is pictured here with her SIL Maria Giuseppa Sianato Capone (1907-1999).
I wonder what the rest of the story was....
