As we close out Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want to talk about something that commonly affects breast cancer screenings: dense breast tissue. Breast tissue density is determined by your breasts’ proportions of fatty and fibrograndular tissue. This is unique to each person.

The more fibrograndular tissue, the denser your breast tissue. Fibrograndular tissue shows up more opaque on mammograms and makes it harder to identify abnormalities during your regular screenings. If you have dense breast tissue, you may require supplemental screenings and a risk assessment.

What began as a third-grade class project became a sweet reminder for us at OhioHealth. 💙 📚

Earlier this year, Mattie McGuire, a student at Mansfield’s St. Peter's School, wrote a heartfelt letter to our associates sharing her appreciation of healthcare workers and how their service inspires her dreams for the future.

Her Spanish teacher, Alma (Elena) Kososky — or as her students lovingly call her, Sra. K — is also an OhioHealth associate and the motivation behind Mattie’s message.

“Mattie has been a student of mine throughout her elementary journey,” Alma said. “She’s incredibly bright, kind and always willing to help others. When she came to me with her letter, it truly touched my heart. What she wrote reflects exactly who she is — thoughtful, genuine and full of compassion.”

Mattie’s words reached beyond the classroom, appearing on the cover of this fall’s OhioHealth Board of Directors agenda, a testament to our mission and the lives we touch. She hopes to one day become a healthcare provider to “help save people.”

Thank you, Mattie, for showing us that compassion inspires, gratitude matters and the work we do today shapes the next generation.

OhioHealth and Nationwide Children's Hospital are once again partnering to expand expert care in our regional communities! Together, we’re opening a new facility in Ontario, OH, that will include primary care, obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics.

The 42,000-square-foot building will be located on W 4th Street in the same lot as the current OhioHealth Ontario Health and Fitness Center – which will also see upgrades as part of the $38.4 million project.

“This represents our commitment to growing families in the north central region,” said Curt Gingrich MD, president of OhioHealth Mansfield and Shelby Hospitals. “The expanded relationship between OhioHealth and Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Ontario will offer more in-depth care for the whole family to meet evolving healthcare needs closer to where they live and work.”

Gun injuries are now the leading cause of death for children and teens ages 1-17. We often think of gun violence as a topic with no common ground — but we can all agree that gun injuries should not be the number one killer of kids.

Gun violence is preventable and we all have a role to play. OhioHealth is partnering with Agree to Agree, an Ad Council initiative, to encourage respectful conversations that find shared values, like the importance of keeping families safe from guns. Menopause is a natural part of aging for women, and it doesn’t need to be a negative experience. We’re not falling for these menopause myths – and you shouldn’t either.

🔥 Hot flashes may be the most widely-known symptom of menopause, but women can have other physical and mental side effects like weight gain and brain fog.

🎂 The average age for menopause is 51, but it can occur anytime between your 40s and 60s. Menopause officially starts when a woman has missed her period for 12 months.

🤍 Menopause can affect your libido, but this doesn’t mean the end of your s*x life. Talk with your healthcare provider and partner to find solutions that work best for you.

🩺 There is no one-size-fits-all for menopause treatment, but you can manage symptoms with the help of your doctor and a good support system.
