In 2004, Southeast Healthcare commissioned acclaimed public artist Stephen Canneto to create the Recovery sculpture—now a familiar and meaningful sight in front of our downtown Columbus building.
Canneto, based in Columbus, is widely recognized for his large-scale public art installations that blend metal, glass, and light to tell stories of resilience, connection, and community. His work often reflects themes of hope and transformation, making him a perfect partner for this meaningful project.
This artwork was part of a larger effort that also saw the opening of our Fresh A.I.R. (Artists in Recovery) Art Gallery, dedicated to showcasing the work of artists affected by mental illness and/or substance use disorders.
Canneto’s Recovery sculpture reflects the truth that mental illness does not define a person, and that recovery is an ongoing, dynamic process of hope, self-discovery, and meaningful engagement in community life.
Recently, Recovery underwent a restoration: glass was replaced, surfaces were cleaned, and lighting was repaired, so it can continue to shine as a beacon of encouragement for years to come.
At Southeast Healthcare, our commitment to honoring the courage of people living with mental illness and substance use disorders is unwavering. This sculpture is more than art; it’s a promise to stand with our community, celebrate every step forward, and remind everyone: Recovery is possible.
