The government shutdown is about to start hurting the most vulnerable Ohioans.

Nearly 1.4 million who rely on SNAP benefits for food — or 1 in 8 Ohioans — could be affected by the federal government shutdown. The Ohio Department of Job & Family Services (ODJFS) has notified the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) beneficiaries that November benefits won’t be issued during the federal shutdown. Almost two-thirds of SNAP recipients are in families with children.

SNAP is the largest anti-hunger program in the U.S., providing a monthly benefit to eligible low-income individuals and families. The program encourages access to healthy foods by helping families afford more nutritious groceries, freeing up household funds for other essential expenses, such as rent, utilities, and medical care.

The next 24 to 72 hours are critical as the "drop-dead" date for Ohio to process benefits on time for November is Oct. 29-30.

Please contact Sen. Bernie Moreno at (202) 224-2315 and Sen. Jon Husted at (202) 224-3353, as well as your local congressman (https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative), and urge them to end the government shutdown to protect these vital benefits for Ohio’s most vulnerable citizens.
