January is Poverty Awareness Month.
When people are struggling to afford housing, food, childcare, or healthcare, the constant stress of survival can take a serious toll on mental well-being. Financial insecurity is linked to higher rates of anxiety, depression, trauma, and chronic stress—yet too often, these challenges are treated as individual failures rather than the result of systemic barriers.
At MHAOhio, we know that mental health cannot be separated from the conditions in which people live. Supporting mental well-being means advocating for policies and systems that reduce poverty, expand access to care, and ensure everyone has the resources they need to thrive.
This Poverty Awareness Month, we stand with individuals and families navigating financial hardship—and we reaffirm our commitment to addressing the root causes that impact mental health, not just the symptoms.
Because mental health is shaped by more than what’s happening inside our minds—it’s shaped by the world around us.
