Last year I did an entire birthstone series, and this was one of June's videos about the history of pearls. This is not technically a stone, rather an organic gem, but we do still refer to pearls as "gemstones," however incorrect that may sound.

Humans have been going completely crazy over pearls for probably as long as humans have been eating shelled mollusks. There is record of pearls being gifted to ancient Chinese royalty as far back as 2300 BCE, and the presence of pearl beds (beds of pearl producing oysters or mussels) has influenced and shaped empires.

Pearls were so important in ancient Rome that they lured Juilius Caesar to Britain, where pearl hunting was only recently outlawed to protect the mollusks. He was so insanely covetous of them, that he made it illegal for anyone outside of the ruling class to wear them (along with other items of luxury). The Roman obsession with pearls carries through the Byzantine empire.

Though we know the oldest pearl jewelry ever found is the necklace in the first print, and that it is held at the Louvre, there is frustratingly little fanfare or information about it. The photos I included are the only photos that have been taken of the necklace that is presumed to be the one in the print. It's amazing how modern it looks- this style of multi-strand pearl choker has been popular dozens, if not hundreds of times since.
