Meet our Member Spotlight, Veda!

"I've been a member since December 2021. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. I studied anthropology at Pitt and zoology at OSU. I started running in the ’70s, but in my 30s, I decided that wasn’t enough—so I began doing workout videos at home. That wasn’t something I found easy to stick with, so I joined a local gym and attended for many years.

That’s where I first discovered yoga—because it was free! Meanwhile, I got downsized at OSU, held several part-time jobs, but kept up with my workouts and eventually decided to become a yoga instructor. Then, COVID hit. I kept up with my personal yoga practice and taught classes via Zoom, but gym attendance fell by the wayside.

In my heart, I knew I needed to get back to weight training. One of my yoga students used to attend my classes wearing a Human Form T-shirt. She raved about the place, the equipment, the location, the schedule, and especially the semi-personal training with excellent coaches. So, I joined.

It immediately felt like the place I was meant to be. Everyone—from the owners and coaches to the other members—is supportive and helpful. They all have a great sense of humor, which is so appreciated when you're trying to improve and need lots of encouragement.

My right shoulder is damaged and weak, but all the coaches work with it and give me plenty of options for stretching, toning, and building strength. I've gotten stronger since attending, met great people, and found it easy to stick with workouts because every class is different.

If you’re someone who wants to start working out in a gym setting, I highly recommend The Human Form. The price is reasonable, the class schedule is flexible, and the coaches are simply the best."

This April, we’re kicking off a series of challenges, held every other month for the rest of the year, with an educational topic in between. Coach Jade’s 30 Days of Fitness Challenge is first up! For the month of April, we’re challenging you to get at least 20 minutes of movement each day. Whether it’s strength training, walking, yoga, or stretching, the goal is to build a consistent habit that improves both your physical and mental health.

Head over to the education board on the turf side of the gym to check out all the details: the benefits of daily movement, why it's important, and how to stay on track. Below the board, you’ll find a tracking sheet where you can log your daily progress. When you're not in the studio, use your own devices or paper to track, and then record it on the sheet. At the end of April, we'll recognize those who’ve stayed the most consistent!

The board is up, so you can check it out. The challenge starts Tuesday, April 1st. Who’s in?

Meet our Coach Spotlight, Jade Smith and celebrate her 3 year anniversary with us! 🥳

“Growing up, I wasn’t an athlete. Exercise and sports filled me with dread. I was taught to measure my health by size and shape, and as a child, I struggled with that mindset—a mindset that followed me into my teenage years.

At 16, my first job was as an assistant at a mental health office. My dad and younger brother worked out at the YMCA, just a short walk away. After struggling to make friends in my new town, I needed an outlet. One day, I tagged along with them and was surprised by what I found.

It was a safe space where I felt comfortable. I had always associated working out with being "fit," especially with fitness influencers at their peak, promoting sculpted bodies and rigid regimens. But at the Y, I saw people of all ages simply maintaining their health—no judgment, no body shaming, no revealing clothes. People were talking, smiling, enjoying their time. It was refreshing. For the first time, I felt like I could be myself without the pressure to change my size or appearance.

Before long, I found myself working there. I loved it. At 16 and 17, I was already passionate about the same things that drive me today. As time went on, I faced major transitions—moving back to Columbus, then Athens, and eventually back home again. Through all these changes, the gym remained a constant—a place where I could always feel safe and grounded.

During the chaos of the pandemic, I was introduced to a trainer in the area who offered me a space to grow. What I initially thought would be temporary turned into a two-year journey. Once again, the gym was my safe space, offering stability in an unpredictable world.

In the spring of 2021, feeling lost and unsure about what was next, I met James Fryer, who introduced me to the Human Form space. At first, I thought it was just for therapists—but a few months later, James reached out about an open position at HF. Despite not having the educational background I thought I needed, I jumped at the opportunity, eager to learn and grow. Stephen and Michelle took a chance on me, and for that, I am incredibly thankful. Looking back, I often ask myself: Did I find the Human Form, or did it find me?

Coaching has given me a sense of purpose. I’m passionate about helping people feel better in their bodies on a holistic level. This is exactly what I needed to change my view of myself, and nothing compares to witnessing the transformation in others. I know how hard it is to commit to that change daily.

Coaching at HF has deepened my understanding of my own body—both mentally and physically. It has empowered me to support my friends and family in their health struggles, taught me to be kinder to myself, and reinforced the importance of longevity in my life and health.

Most importantly, coaching has introduced me to a community of kind, supportive people who have become family. I couldn’t be more grateful for the last 3-4 years, and I’m excited to continue growing.”

Found in plastics, textiles, toys, pesticides and more, these natural or man made chemicals enter your body through the air, your diet, your skin and the water you drink. They disrupt the chain of community between your hormones and many biological processes. While we can’t avoid them entirely there are many small steps you can take to reduce your exposure.
