✨2 years ago, I learned about the amazing work IBCLC’s do and how perfectly lactation services go hand in hand with occupational therapy. Since then, I’ve been working non-stop behind the scenes to expand my knowledge and hone my skills in order to be able to better serve babies and families.

After hundreds of hours of courses, mentorship, and studying, I found out this week I passed the board exam and can now call myself an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)!

I am looking forward to offering even more well-rounded care to families in Central Ohio and continuing my never ending learning journey ✨

Sidelying is one of the most underrated positions for babies!

🌷 Sidelying can promote healthy development by enhancing strength, reducing the risk of a flat head, and encouraging exploration of their surroundings!

🌷 By placing a baby on their side, they have the opportunity to engage their neck, shoulders, and hips, developing the muscle strength and coordination required for rolling.

🌷 Sidelying can also assist in the development of manual and motor skills as babies learn to reach, grasp, and interact with objects around them.

When rolling in and out of tummy time, pause on each side and hang out there for a little bit!

🔗Fascia is the missing link!🔗

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a therapeutic approach that focuses on the fascial system—a web of connective tissue that surrounds and supports every muscle, bone, and organ in the body.

Developed by physical therapist John F. Barnes, MFR releases restrictions in the fascia, which can contribute to pain, limited range of motion, and a wide range of other issues.

The technique involves gentle, sustained pressure to help eliminate fascial restrictions and restore flexibility and function.

We are trained in pediatric myofascial release which can be the key to successful rolling, sitting, crawling, sleeping, breastfeeding, GI issues, regulation and more!

High or low muscle tone can significantly impact a child's development!

High Muscle Tone (Hypertonia):
🌱 Limited flexibility and range of motion and increased tension throughout the body, potentially leading to discomfort and pain
🌱 Difficulty with fine and gross motor skills
🌱 Difficulty with feeding
🌱 Difficulty sleeping
🌱 Increased fussiness

Low Muscle Tone (Hypotonia):
🌱 Often labeled as “floppy”
🌱 Delayed motor skills, such as grasping, crawling, sitting, or standing
🌱 Challenges with posture and balance, impacting coordination and stability

⭐️Proximal stability is needed for distal mobility!⭐️

This means a child’s trunk must have good control and proper muscle balance (but not falsely relying on increased tension) before we can address/expect to see improvements in fine motor skills, oral motor skills, and gross motor skills.

Early intervention with an occupational or physical therapist is crucial to address muscle tone, tension, and imbalance in order to support a child's overall development!

👶🏼 Plagiocephaly, also known as flat head syndrome, is when an infant develops a flat spot or misshapen head. The skull is soft and malleable in the first few months of life and prolonged pressure can disrupt the round shape. 1 in 4 babies develop this issue!

Some risk factors include:
🌱birth trauma
🌱torticollis
🌱lots of time on back
🌱first baby
🌱multiples
🌱frequent container use
🌱low birth weight

It is important to monitor your baby’s head shape starting day 1!

If you notice any flat spots, don’t worry! Reach out to schedule therapy services ASAP. There are things that can be done prior to needing a helmet which may be recommended if the issue is not corrected by 6 months.

Slightly less common types of misshapen head include brachycephaly - a uniform flattening of the back of the head resulting in a widening appearance and dolichocephaly - head being flat on both sides and longer from front to back.

Torticollis is twisting or tightening of the neck muscles, causing the head to be tilted to one side while the chin points to the other side.

What can cause it?
Position in the Womb: Sometimes a baby’s position in the womb can lead to increased pressure on the neck muscles

Birth Trauma: Difficult or traumatic birth, especially if there was a lot of pulling or twisting during delivery, can lead to injury or stretching of the neck muscles

Muscle Imbalance: Torticollis can be related to muscle imbalances or weaknesses in the neck muscles

Multiple Births: Twins or multiples may have a higher risk of developing torticollis due to limited space in the womb

Genetic Factors: While rare, there can be genetic factors that contribute to torticollis

What can it affect?
Breastfeeding and Bottle Feeding: The limited neck mobility may make it challenging for the baby to turn their head to one side, which is necessary for latching onto the breast or bottle

Physical Development: The restricted neck movement may hinder their ability to explore their environment, turn their head in both directions, and engage in activities such as tummy time. It can also cause a flat spot on the head (plagiocephaly)

Motor Skills: development of motor skills such as lifting the head, rolling over, sitting up, and crawling.
Visual Skills: Limited neck mobility can restrict their field of vision and make it difficult to track moving objects or follow faces

Speech and Language: Decreased social engagement can potentially affect early communication and social skills

Sleep: Can lead to disrupted sleep patterns for both the infant and parents, affecting the overall quality of sleep. Finding a comfortable sleeping position may be challenging for the baby

How can we fix it?
OT/PT: A pediatric therapist will work with the baby to perform stretching exercises and gentle massage techniques to lengthen and strengthen the tight neck muscles

Positioning: it’s essential to encourage babies to turn their head in both directions while sleeping, playing, feeding

Tummy Time: helps strengthen neck and upper body muscles

Bodywork such as gentle massage or fascial techniques can have many potential benefits for babies!

🌱Bonding: Bodywork provides an opportunity for parents to bond with their baby through touch, enhancing the parent-child relationship.

🌱Relaxation: Gentle massage or touch can help soothe a fussy or irritable baby, promoting relaxation and better sleep and feeding outcomes.

🌱Improved digestion: Some forms of bodywork like tummy massage, can aid in relieving gas and constipation in babies.

🌱Development: Gentle movements and stretches can help with a baby's motor skills, flexibility, and body mapping/awareness.

🌱Pain relief: Bodywork may offer relief from discomfort caused by issues like tension or teething.

We are trained in multiple types of bodywork geared toward helping your baby thrive and feel comfortable in their little body! We have training in pediatric Myofascial release (MFR), craniosacral fascial therapy (CFT) and infant massage! Contact us to learn more about how we can help your family 🫶🏼

🌱Occupational therapists are trained to work with all types of people across the lifespan

🌱Occupations are defined as anything that a person needs or wants to do, anything that brings meaning or purpose to their life. They can include everyday activities that people complete as individuals, with family, or in communities.

🌱For a baby, they can include feeding, play, sleep, learning, and social interaction

🌱For a parent, they can include feeding, self care, work, health & wellness, social interaction, and more

🌱Whatever your goals, as a lactation-informed occupational therapist, I can help - breastfeeding, pumping, bottle feeding, transitioning to solids, sensory processing, motor milestones (oral motor, fine motor, gross motor), and more

🌱Your goals are our goals so let’s work together!
