Happy 1/2 Off Easter Candy Day!
Murray Hill Dental - West Columbus recommends choosing chocolate over sticky or hard candies for Easter, as it dissolves quickly and causes fewer cavities. Best options include dark chocolate and nuts, while to avoid, limit candies like Peeps, jelly beans, and sour candies which cling to teeth, erode enamel, or cause fractures.
Best Easter Candy (Dr. Brown Approved):
Chocolate: Dark chocolate is preferred as it has less sugar, but milk chocolate is acceptable because it washes away easily.
Nut-Filled Candy: Peanut butter eggs or chocolate with nuts help break up plaque and are less sticky.
Sugarless Gum: Chewing gum with the ADA seal for 20 minutes after eating helps prevent cavities.

Worst Easter Candy (Avoid or Limit):
Hard Candies/Lollipops: These keep sugar in the mouth for too long and risk breaking teeth.
Sticky/Chewy Candy: Gummies, jelly beans, and taffy stick to tooth crevices, increasing decay risk.
Sour Candy: Highly acidic and erodes tooth enamel.
Peeps: Very high sugar content.
Tips for Dental Health:
Time it Right: Eat candy with meals, as saliva production is higher, reducing acid damage.
Wait to Brush: Wait 30–60 minutes after eating candy to brush, allowing enamel to recover.
Hydrate: Drink water after eating sweets to rinse away sugar and acid.
Rinse: Use water to rinse the mouth, especially if brushing is not immediately possible.
