The Division of Cannabis Control (“DCC” or “Division”) has submitted a rule proposal to the Common Sense Initiative to eliminate the patient and caregiver registration fee. Currently, patients pay $50 annually while caregivers pay $25.

The Division is working with its software vendor to remove the fee from the Medical Ma*****na Patient & Caregiver Registry (“registry”) as soon as the technological changes can be made. The short answer is yes. At least until September 2024.

Even though the law will go into effect within 30 days, it will take the industry roughly one year to come up with the logistics required to satisfy the recreational market.

Following that medical patients will still get a preference in terms of shorter lines, better high potency product and lower pricing.
All said and done, it may still be worth getting your medical card for multiple other benefits.

So what happens to the medical program and do I still need a card?

✅ The medical program will continue to provide patients with a medical recommendation.
Patients with MMJ card will get priority in terms of higher potency product, shorter wait times at the dispensary and lower price for their medications.
If this bill passes, it won’t go into effect until 2024.
