World Down Syndrome Day is a time to celebrate, reflect, and take meaningful action.

People with Down syndrome deserve access, opportunity, and true belonging in every part of their community. Today is a reminder that inclusion is not a one-day effort. It is something we build together, every day.

We celebrate people, families, and advocates who continue to push for systems that see the whole person and create space for everyone to thrive. We also recommit to the work ahead, ensuring that every person with developmental disabilities has the support and opportunities they need to live a full and meaningful life.

Join us in moving beyond awareness and into action.

ElevateDD believes that systems should work with people, not around them. That’s why we provided testimony on House Bill 585 this week, advocating for solutions that expand access to safe, accessible housing in our communities.

“When people with developmental disabilities have access to safe, accessible housing in their communities, they are better able to maintain employment, build relationships, and live full and meaningful lives.”

Housing is more than a place to live. It’s a foundation for health, stability, and opportunity. House Bill 585 adopts rules regarding the use of community capital assistance funds to create more options and choice for people with developmental disabilities. Read more about House Bill 585 here: https://www.legislature.ohio.gov/legislation/136/hb585

We’re proud to lend our voice and show up to advance systems that reflect dignity and choice and build true communities for all.

“At DSACO, social work is woven into everything we do. We support people with Down syndrome and their families prenatally through adulthood across 25 counties in Central Ohio, ensuring no family navigates the journey alone.”

March is National Social Work Month, a time to recognize the impact of social workers in strengthening communities and supporting families. DSACO: Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio's licensed social worker, Kirsti Osborne, shared how social work shapes and strengthens the work we do every day.

On Wednesday morning, ElevateDD’s President & CEO Troy Hunter joined other advocates to testify before the Ohio Senate Health Committee in support of House Bill 141, which would establish Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care Centers (PPECCs) in Ohio.

ElevateDD has heard from families who are struggling to find child care that can safely support children with developmental disabilities and complex needs. Our statewide survey of 768 families found that many want child care but cannot access it because providers are unable to meet their child’s needs. For many families, this lack of care also affects their ability to work and maintain stability.

House Bill 141 would add an important option to Ohio’s continuum of care by creating medically staffed settings that can support children with complex needs while helping families stay connected to work and community.

Strengthening access to care helps ensure every child and every family has the support they need to thrive.

"I told them my story about why protecting Medicaid is important to me: it helps me with transportation to and from work, with my provider who helps me be more independent, and with enabling me to live with my roommate instead of at home with my mom. For people who are living on their own with a roommate, it’s important to have a provider who can help you with cooking, meal planning, take you grocery shopping or to Special Olympics, and more. Because if you don’t have a provider, when you need help with something, who will help you?" - Stephanie Leppert, DSACO: Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio's Outreach & Advocacy Associate

Visit our News page to learn more about Stephanie's advocacy experience, funded by DSACO's Marge Barnheiser Advocacy Scholarship. Applications for this year's scholarship are now open!
