We are proud to be one of the sponsors of the Empty Bowl Luncheon hosted by Feeding the Valley Food Bank. This wonderful event supports their Kids Café Program, which provides nutritious meals to children in our community who need them most.

Each year, attendees receive a beautiful handcrafted bowl. I will say that my kids collect them and absolutely love them!

Thank you to our amazing staff members who attended and helped support such a meaningful cause. We are grateful to be part of a community that comes together to care for its children. 💙

We are open for appointments Saturday, March 7th. Please call if your child needs a visit.

Did you know that we offer telehealth appointments? For many families, this means you can connect with your child’s provider from the comfort of home — no commute, no waiting room, and fewer missed work or school days.

We frequently complete visits with parents while they are at work, making it easier to fit healthcare into busy schedules.

Virtual visits can also be especially helpful if you would like to discuss sensitive concerns — such as behavioral or mental health topics — without your child present.

If you have questions about whether a virtual visit is right for your child, we’re happy to help!

👶 Umbilical Hernias (“Outie” Belly Buttons) in Kids

I’ve had lots of questions this week about umbilical hernias — commonly called “outie” belly buttons — so let’s talk about it!

Umbilical hernias are very common in babies and young children and are usually not worrisome. They happen when there’s a small opening in the abdominal muscles where the umbilical cord used to be.

The good news?
As your baby grows, the abdominal muscles gradually come together, and most umbilical hernias close on their own by age 2–4 years.

🔎 When should you be concerned?

If the hernia is large

If it is not getting smaller over time

If it becomes painful, firm, discolored, or cannot be gently pushed back in

In those cases, talk to your pediatrician about whether a referral to a pediatric surgeon is needed.

💡 And one important myth to clear up:
The old wives’ tale of taping a coin over the belly button does not help the hernia close — and can sometimes irritate the skin.

As always, if you’re unsure, we’re happy to take a look 💛

🥄 When can my baby start solid foods? 🍼

This is a question we get all the time! The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends introducing solid foods around 4–6 months of age, when your baby shows signs of developmental readiness.

✨ Signs your baby may be ready for solids include:
• Good head and neck control
• Ability to move food from the front of the mouth to the back with their tongue
• Interest in food — watching you eat, opening their mouth, or bringing hands to their mouth

👅 If you offer a small amount of puréed food and your baby pushes it right back out with their tongue, that’s okay! It often means they’re not quite ready yet.

👶 If your baby is at least 4 months old and showing some of these signs, talk with your pediatrician about starting solids.
⏳ Remember: premature babies may take a little longer to be ready, and that’s completely normal.

As always, we’re happy to help guide you through this exciting milestone — just ask at your next visit! 💙

🌡️ Let’s Talk About Fever 🌡️

With many illnesses circulating right now, we wanted to review what a fever is.

A fever is defined as a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher. Fever is not an illness itself—it’s a sign that the body’s immune system is working to fight an infection.

👶 How to check a temperature in newborns:
A re**al temperature is the most accurate and preferred method for newborns and young infants.

🚨 Important reminder for young infants:
Any infant younger than 3 months with a fever should be evaluated promptly to make sure there is no serious bacterial infection that requires treatment.

If you’re ever unsure about your child’s temperature or symptoms, please don’t hesitate to call our office.
