Special Smiles® discipline within Special Olympics Ohio’s Healthy Athletes® program are currently seeking licensed dentists and dental hygienists who may be interested in serving as Clinical Directors. Clinical Directors provide leadership at screenings, ensure clinical quality and adherence to protocols, mentor volunteers and students, and help advance inclusive oral health practices across Ohio. Depending on the event, this role is volunteer-based.

The program is designed to reduce dental anxiety, identify unmet oral health needs, and connect athletes to follow-up dental care. Since its launch, Special Smiles has helped identify high rates of untreated decay, periodontal disease, and other oral health concerns—underscoring the critical role dental professionals play in advancing health equity.

Beyond its direct impact on athletes, Special Smiles also serves as a valuable professional and educational opportunity. Dental professionals and students gain hands-on experience delivering inclusive, trauma-informed care to individuals with intellectual disabilities—an area often underrepresented in traditional dental education.
