Patient Care
Our department offers patients the latest examination and diagnostic techniques, and medical and surgical treatments. Services range from routine eye examinations and contact lens fitting to the most up-to-date laser and surgical treatments for such major diseases as glaucoma, diabetic eye diseases, retinal detachments and diseases, macular degeneration, and cataracts, as well as the latest techniques in refractive surgery. Education & Training
The Department’s three-year residency program is one of the most competitive in the country. The fellowship training offers numerous clinical, surgical, research and teaching opportunities in the areas of cornea, external disease and refractive surgery, vitreoretinal disease and surgery, and neuro-ophthalmology/orbital disease and surgery. Research Efforts
Our faculty are involved in a number of multi-center clinical trials funded by the National Eye Institute, and have published major textbooks recognized for advancing ophthalmic medical education. Through their research, our faculty members contribute to medicine's base of knowledge of ocular diseases through efforts aimed at new treatments for the prevention and treatment of blinding disorders.

We’re excited to welcome Dr. Illia Petrenko, an oculoplastic surgeon from Kyiv, Ukraine, to The Ohio State Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences!

Dr. Petrenko will be completing a 3-week observership, working alongside Dr. Raymond Cho, who previously collaborated with Dr. Petrenko during medical outreach visits to Ukraine in 2023 and 2024 (Pictured second).

This ongoing partnership reflects our commitment to global medical education and advancing eye care through international collaboration. We're glad to have you visit Ohio State, Dr. Petrenko!

We were honored to welcome Dr. Rishi Singh, Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Mass Eye and Ear, as our guest speaker at the 8th Annual Retina Case Forum this past Friday! 👁️✨

The event brought together physicians from across the country along with our fellows and residents for a day of engaging case discussions, knowledge sharing, and meaningful reconnections with alumni. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and made it such a success!

We had a fantastic time last month as Dr. Martinez guided our DMEK wet lab! 🌟 DMEK is a cutting-edge technique for corneal transplants that replaces only the affected layer of cells, leading to quicker recovery and fewer complications.

We’re grateful for the expertise of our attendings—Dr. Adam Cloud, Dr. Tyler Oostra, and Dr. Christine Martinez—and the enthusiasm of our residents Benjamin Park, Kara Kichler, and Kathi Jindachomthong. Always exciting to learn and grow together! 👁️✨

We had the privilege of hosting class of 1966 alumni Dr. Charles Leone and his family. During their visit, we showcased our Surgery and Clinical Learning Center (SCLC) and highlighted a new recognition plaque. His generous donation, in honor of his late wife, Ellen, to the Ophthalmology department enabled us to establish the SCLC, which will train the future generation of Buckeye ophthalmologists.
