Happy National Siblings Day!
“When I was first born, he was my protector—and now I’m his.” – Crystal Swango”
When Crystal was born, she had a built-in best friend, her one-year-old brother, Brandon. As they grew, Crystal naturally stepped into a supportive role, helping with therapy, schoolwork, and the everyday challenges of life with Cerebral Palsy. She worked throughout high school and college to help support their single-parent household, and while still in college, she became Brandon’s legal guardian.
From the moment she had her own home, Crystal made sure Brandon always had a place there for weekends and holidays. She supported him in his relationships and activities in the group home where he lived, until eight years ago, when she became an independent provider and, alongside her husband, welcomed Brandon into her home permanently.
Crystal’s career path has been deeply influenced by her relationship with Brandon. She earned her associate’s degree and became a certified physical therapy assistant to help individuals build independence. More recently, she completed her bachelor’s degree in business administration, working toward her goal of opening a provider agency to ensure others receive the same quality care she provides Brandon.
She is also active in her community, through her church, as secretary of Morrow Abilities Partners, and as co-coordinator of the Morrow County Aktion Club. Her passion is creating opportunities where individuals with developmental disabilities are not only included but truly belong.
Brandon has thrived as part of Crystal’s family. His independence and social skills have grown through shared experiences, and he shares a special bond with Crystal’s son, where they’re more like brothers than uncle and nephew. You’ll often find him proudly cheering at baseball and basketball games!
Crystal will tell you that this journey has shaped her just as much as it has supported Brandon. Through their relationship, she has grown in compassion, patience, and empathy. She is the wife, mother, and person she is today because she is Brandon’s sister.
