When the human body goes without food for an extended period—typically between 14 and 24 hours—it initiates a process known as autophagy, meaning “self-eating.” During this phase, the body begins to break down and recycle old, damaged, or dysfunctional cells, including those linked to aging, inflammation, and possibly even conditions like cancer and Alzheimer’s.

Autophagy acts as a natural internal cleansing and repair mechanism, clearing out cellular debris, misfolded proteins, and defective mitochondria—essentially performing a deep clean from within. This built-in survival response not only conserves energy but also promotes tissue renewal and supports immune function.

Discovered by Japanese scientist Yoshinori Ohsumi—who received the 2016 Nobel Prize for his work—autophagy has since become a central focus in the fields of health, aging, and longevity. Intermittent or occasional fasting may enhance this regenerative process, helping the body reset and restore itself.
