Adult Congenital Heart Disease at Nationwide Children's Hospital

Adult Congenital Heart Disease at Nationwide Children's Hospital Information, resources and support for patients and families affected by congenital heart disease.

In partnership with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, the Columbus Ohio Adult Congenital Heart Disease (COACH) Program at Nationwide Children's Hospital was created to meet the medical and surgical needs of adolescents and adults with congenital heart disease. ACHD is a unique and complex population with different considerations than children with congenital heart disease. Most adul

t cardiologists are not trained in congenital heart disease; pediatric cardiologists are not trained in adult issues. Nationwide Children’s is fortunate to have a specialized program allowing adolescents and adults to continue their cardiac care at the same institution. The COACH Program is comprised of a dedicated team of medical experts who have devoted their careers to the care of adult congenital heart disease patients. Our cardiologists are Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics as well as Adult and Pediatric Cardiology, therefore understanding the patient's heart defect, surgeries and other adult issues. We provide comprehensive care for adolescents and adults with congenital heart disease, regardless of age or severity of illness. Our coordinated team approach encompasses the initial evaluation, explanation of therapeutic options, innovative surgical and transcatheter therapies and consultative follow up.

Vivien Thomas was a pioneer in the world of CHD. It’s fitting that he be remember as part of not only Black History but also Heart Month. To learn more about his contributions to the CHD world click below.

In honor of Black History Month and CHD Awareness Week, ACHA recognizes Vivien Thomas, a true pioneer in the treatment of congenital heart disease. Despite facing significant barriers, he played a critical role in developing the groundbreaking “blue baby operation” alongside Drs. Alfred Blalock and Helen Taussig in the 1940s—revolutionizing CHD care. To learn more about his lasting impact, read ACHA Board of Directors Vice Chair William F. Causey’s blog post, which highlights the crucial role Thomas played in his life-saving surgery in 1952: https://bit.ly/3Qhd0Ri

🐢 Can you spot the turtle playing hopscotch? 🐦 What about the 3 birds sitting high in the branches of the trees?

Our Magic Forest helps to bring the elements of nature into the hospital and even has a fun seek and find for patients and their siblings who are visiting the hospital. It's the perfect thing to do to help kids be kids during their visit or stay.
