It’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month!

This year’s theme is Celebrating Value and Talent in celebration of NDEAM’s 80th anniversary.

“Celebrating America means celebrating the value and talent that all Americans – including people with disabilities – add to our nation’s workplaces and communities. As we approach the 80th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, the Department of Labor remains committed to ensuring all people have the opportunity to find meaningful work.” —Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer

In 1945, the nation first designated a national week to recognize the contributions of people with physical disabilities. Designated by Congress as NDEAM in 1988, the commemoration evolved to acknowledge the importance of increasing the number of people with disabilities in the workforce.

As of 2024, the unemployment rate for people with disabilities was 9.1%, compared to 4.3% for individuals without disabilities, indicating there is still a disparity in employment opportunities.

September is Deaf Awareness Month!

At Greenleaf, we proudly stand with the Deaf community and celebrate the unique strengths of every individual.

Here are some facts you might not know:

• Approximately 15% of American adults (37.5 million) report some trouble hearing.

• 58.5% of countries have not yet legally recognized their national sign language. Deaf people worldwide have historically faced, and continue to face, discrimination concerning the use of their national sign languages.

• About 18% of adults with moderate or worse hearing loss have depression, compared to 8% of all adults.

• More than 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents.

• Terminology to Avoid: Some common terms that are generally viewed as offensive within the deaf community include “hearing impaired,” “deaf-mute,” and “deaf and dumb.” These terms have some intrinsic problems, such as a deficit framing that assumes that deafness is negative, but also have contextual issues, where usage of those terms indicates that the user is unfamiliar with the deaf community.

Together, we can build a more inclusive and accessible world—one where everyone can thrive.

Congratulations to Zane, Greenleaf’s Participant of the Month for September!

Zane was nominated by his Job Coach in recognition of his exceptional work ethic and independence while working Sanitation in the Nutrition Department at Mt. Carmel Health System.

“Zane is an exemplary young man and has been a valued addition to Mt. Carmel's staff, with universal praise from both coworkers and managers.

He's displayed an exceptional work ethic. He's conscientious and has been a quick study – both with the tasks as well as soft skills with peers and supervisors.

Zane reacted positively to coaching support, but quickly established his independence and a desire (and ability) to perform at a high level.”

Keep up the great work!

This Friday, September 12th, the Greenleaf website URL is changing from greenleafjts.COM to greenleafjts.ORG!

This change is more than just a website update. It’s a reflection of who we are. The switch to .ORG recognizes Greenleaf as the nonprofit we’ve always been, dedicated to empowering job seekers with disabilities with job training and support.

For 30 years, we’ve been growing, evolving, and serving our community—and this shift is part of continuing our mission. We’re proud to be Greenleaf Job Training Services, and we’re looking forward to this next chapter.

What it means for you:
• Our team’s email addresses will change from .COM to .ORG – but we’ll still receive emails if you send them to our old addresses!
• You’ll go to GreenleafJTS.org to visit our website, but our old URL will still get you there, too!

Thank you for being here with us!

Students are thriving in our Summer Youth Work Experience program!

Greenleaf participant Clayton, 16, worked last year at Goodwill’s transportation department detailing cars.

This summer, he decided to try something new and worked at the Giant Eagle in Heath. He spent several weeks learning to stock shelves and bag groceries.

Clayton said he enjoys earning money — to add to his Lego collection — and might be interested in a job at McDonald’s or Walmart after graduation.

Thanks to our Greenleaf business partners and employers who help make these opportunities possible!
