For the month of March, we celebrate Disability Awareness!

This month-long observance was established in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan to help increase awareness, public understanding, and uncover potential of Americans with disabilities; to provide encouragement and opportunities for them to lead productive lives and reach their full potential.

What does this month mean and why is it important? This month serves as a chance to celebrate achievements, advocate for rights, and promoting inclusivity within societies. The importance of this month is not just to raise awareness, but to help reduce any stigma, promote self-advocacy, and ensuring that individuals with disabilities are included in making decisions that will affect their lives. Stay tuned because this month we're going to take you on an adventure through the four regions of Developmental Services, Inc.! As a non-profit organization that partners with the State in the delivery of our services, we know that we have many advocates in the Capitol, and our clients took the opportunity to stop by and give them Valentine's Day cards that they made as a small way to thank them for their constant support. Our elected officials have enabled a future for our clients that is inclusive and full of opportunities that reduce barriers they face, and with the help of our staff and our community, their future has never been brighter.

Recent national data shows that employment among individuals with disabilities reached historic highs at the end of 2025, reflecting broader momentum in inclusive hiring and workforce participation across the U.S. This trend highlights both expanding opportunities for individuals with disabilities in the labor market and increased recognition by employers of the value that diverse talent brings to workplaces. For the IDD and direct care sector, it signals a positive shift in how careers are viewed and accessed, and underscores how crucial roles like Employment Consultants are becoming part of a larger movement toward inclusive employment. As more employers embrace accessibility and inclusion, there’s growing potential for meaningful, community-based careers for both those we serve and those who support them.
